I'm surprised this one has yet to surface in the conversation. "Taming the Taildragger" should be in everybody's home library. I love this simple book; it's short, to the point and a WONDERFULLY simple review! For first timers it's a terrific place to begin.

For REALLY old time bush flying try to find Noel Wein's autobiography, I think called "Alaska Bush Pilot". I have a copy here someplace, but can't find it right now.
