  • April 20

Marks the passing of Robert (Rosie) Rosenthal who flew 52 missions for the bloody 100th out of Thorpe Abbotts during WW2. Fantastic story of his exploits is described in the excellent book by Ed Jablonsky in his book " Flying Fortress." Which is one of my favorites. Included is " Big Frank Valesh" who went thru 7 ( seven) B17's all named " Hang the Expense" if you google hang the expense, you'll see the tail of one, destroyed by flac, tail gunner blown free, made it down UNINJURED, was a P.O.W.! Valesh almost washed out of cadets, went on to be one of the best pilots in the group. It's a must read!

I saw him last at the Brodhead, MACC fly-in last September I believe. I have his book as well.

Rosie Rosenthal died in 2007. He practiced law and was from just north of NY City. Big Frank Valesh was from Minn. died in the 80's. In Wisconson.

Thanks. Obviously I had the wrong face attached to the name then.
