  • 1st Annual Taylorcraft Fly-In 2012 - Osceola, Iowa (I75)

The 1st Annual Osceola Taylorcraft Fly In will be held Sunday, September 2, and Monday, September 3, 2012. Fly in, or drive in - everyone is welcome! We have been working on the preparation for several months now. It will be a great time!!!

The timing was conveniently set so that you can attend 2 events in 1 trip. The Antique Aircraft Association (AAA) at Blakesburg, Iowa has their annual fly in during Labor Day week-end as well. They usually have over 300 antique aircraft (several Taylorcrafts, too) flying around from a grass strip. You will be able to attend the AAA Fly In Friday, August 31, 2012 and Saturday, September 1, 2012.....then you can come on over to the Taylorcraft Fly In (about 30 minutes flying time) on Sunday, September 2, 2012 and Monday, September 3, 2012.

We will have plenty of things to do including: Discounted motel prices; GREAT FOOD; Door Prizes provided by Boyt Sporting Goods to include: Plaques & $25 Fuel for: Oldest Taylorcraft; Longest Flight; and Best Restored. There will be breakfast, lunch and supper provided by Blue Mule BBQ on Sunday. (You don't want to miss the BBQ) On Monday morning, there will be a free-will donation breakfast to support the local animal shelter. We will have historic Aviation movies as well as a couple of short movies filmed on location here in Osceola, Iowa featuring a few of our local pilots. After the BBQ on Sunday evening, there will be transportation to your motel (if you are not camping) or to Lakeside Casino & Convention Center. Lakeside has discounted their Sunday motel rates to $59.00 but hurry...there are only 20 rooms left at that price. Call Lakeside at 1-877-477-5253 to make your reservation - be sure to mention you are coming for the Taylorcraft Fly In for your discount. Other motels have discounted prices also - see "Destinations" section in newsletter for more information.

    Questions? - just give us a call: Mark at 641 414 2571, or Gene at 641 414 8488.

We want you to come to Osceola and have a great time - hope to see you there!

One of the other guys will have pictures but as one that went I can tell you it was great... excellent food .. a good band... great people very nice facility more staff then a man knew what to do with and I made a bunch of friends so all in all it was all a man could ask for.... now if Isaac hadn't raised it ugly head and made the weather bad in East Ks and most of Missouri the turnout would have been a bit better but in some ways it was still cool because they got to practice with a good crowd but not a huge one for their first attempt. I had a great time and the 327 mile flight for me was worth it.

We were socked in in my area. Horrible weather but we needed the rain something fierce. I'm glad for Mark it went well.
              Cheers,

We were socked in from Cedar Rapids, Ia. only a few flight hours away. Mary and I ended up driving to Blakesburg and then over to Osceola. The weather was great, a good crowd and exceptional hosting by the organizers as well as all their help. We had never been to their airport before, don't miss it next time!!! The place is a pilot's dream, neat, neat place, great facilities and hosts. Had great fun and conversations about Taylorcrafts and aviation.

Sorry I missed this. I felt your pain Marty!

Saturday there was rain, which we needed, and some funnel clouds, which we didn't, in the area. I had planned to go to Blakesburg for the day/night and then over to Osceola on Sunday morning. After letting the storms pass I packed up the tent and headed out for Osceola on Sunday. Because of the TFR around the Quad Cities, I started out on a SW heading to stay far away. That gave me a nice 15K tailwind. About 1/3 of the way into the 300 or so miles I ran out of ceilings and visibility and had to make a 180 to go back to the nearest airport to try and wait things out. It wasn't meant to be for me, so I grabbed lunch from the vending machine at KVYS and fought the headwind back home. Next year..

I sent Joe a friend request so maybe they will come up when he excepts it. You guys weren't there when Joe and his buddy climbed in the little tent to sleep and it kept blowing up like a balloon with the the sound of their snoring.... when they were in sync it was nearly twice as big as when they put it up. Was a very good time glad to meet all you guys.

IN TEXAS... snoring like that keeps the Coyotes away... but attracts the Ferrel Hogs.

We left Amana Iowa on Saturday morning in our Taylorcraft with the intention of going to Blakesburg for the AAA fly in then on Sunday evening or Monday morning stop in Osceola for the Taylorcraft fly in. I called Blakesburg on the phone and asked how the weather was before we left at about 9am, the office lady said that it was not raining and the winds were a bit strong but ok. So we left Amana, Then at about 23 miles from Ottumwa the Ottumwa automated weather report reported ceilings 1800ft with rain and winds gusting at 28 from the NE, from where we were we were bumping around at 1700ft and getting a lot of turbulence and rain with decreasing visibility,. Ottumwa is only about 15 miles east of Blakesburg. At that point we turned around went home got in the car and drove to Blakesburg. Met Jim Zannger who came there from NW Iowa,in his Taylorcraft and had a geat Time with about 300 to 400 vintage type aircraft in attendance. We just were not up to making it to Osceola by Monday morning.
