  • The construction of a Light Aircraft

Just ran across this posted on another site today, and thought I'd share it here...eventhough it's about Piper...it's definitely worth a look!

Watch the construction of a Piper J-3 Cub filmed at the actual Piper aircraft factory. Filmed in 1943.

I have seen this before. Lock Haven, PA is my home town. I spent a lot of time riding my bike down to the factory to watch the work on airplanes.

How about that primer process using a garden hose?

A quick check of N-Numbers in the film shows
NC42021 (the rudder installation) not currently registered
NC41409 (On the compass rose) given to three different planes, none J3s, all exported and deregistered.

It would have been fun to see one of the in-construction planes still flying.

Also, The plane on the compass rose, NC41409, had a PA-12 style door. J-5's prior to the war had normal cub-style split doors. Was this perhaps a war-time J-5 with the PA-12 style door???
