  • Spar butt drill jig

I need to drill the 5 holes (per spar) in the butt ends of my main spars to accept the larger bushings (that I'm making in compliance with the CAP STC).

Does anyone have a drill jig similar to the one shown below (picture scarfed from Rob Lees' website) that I can rent or borrow to do this job?

    Thanks,
    Tim

    I have no jig.

I wonder if you could get or have made a pilot drill bit whose pilot matched the old bushings and the other part matched the new bushings.

A tool & die maker runs a buisness nearby and he does all my reamer and blade sharpening. I bet a guy like him could make a pilot drill or reamer or cutter that would do this job.

      Re: Spar butt drill jig

I just noticed this post from Bill Berle below:

He's got a jig that he has offered (back in Oct 2005) to loan.
But it looks like he hasn't visited this site since September.

      Dave,
Thanks for the good suggestion. Let me check around with toolmakers in my area to see what is available to me.

Both Bill and Robert Lees mentioned using a Forstner bit.
Can you imagine a toolmaker making a .688" Forstner bit with a 1/2" (or whatever the existing hole is) pilot?
Or some bit that makes a very clean hole?

I have the setup I used when I did my spars. Not as complex Bob's but it worked fine. I had a Machinist make a pilot drill guide. I also have the proper bit. I will be gone till after Jan1. I could send it to you then. Just send me your address.

I am picking up a T-craft to be restored after the 1st of the year. It may be several months before I start on the spars, but I would appreciate your email address so I can contact you to rent/borrow (whatever) your set up. thanks. Lee Nicklas [email protected]
