  • William Newton, Charles Kirkland Florida USA 1962

Is there a way of determining the 'N' number of a 65hp Taylorcraft that crashed about May 09, 1962 in Tarpon Springs, Florida? The plane was owned by William E. Newton of Largo, Florida. Killed in the crash were Charles Kirkland and Elbert Palmer, Jr.

The reason for my inquiry is that Charles Kirkland left behind his younger brother, David who is searching for any information about his brothers death.

Thank you for any help you may be able to give.

Go to the FAA data base and do a search. Not sure if the online records go back that far but they have copied much of the old Microfilm stuff over.... They would have a record of the accident, Its just a metter of going into thta year. The fact you have the date helps a lot. The N number will be in the records.

I went to the NTSB Aviation Accident Database and the only accident showing was a C-54 from 09 May of 1962. 1962 is as far back as it goes, and obviously does not show everything. Most appear to be only airline accidents. There were no accidents indicated in Tarpon Springs, FL in 1962. If you want to mess around with a search go here: http://www.ntsb.gov/aviationquery/index.aspx

That is the same info i found. I did find a Kent State University site which was suppose to have info on those dates, for a price. Marv

I suggest searching newspapers from that region that may have a photo of the accident. It may require a visit to the area to go to a library or some other source of that data. Having the date is a big step. Search that date and the next couple days. Also if there are "weekly" papers, a week or two following the date.

It appears the accident was mid day on May 6th, 1962. Awful situation with the plane in flames prior to crashing. Anyway, try this link to a St. Petersburg Times article. The paper was May 7th and it said "yesterday".
