  • Tail Wheel Tire Problem

I have a Lang tail wheel assembly with a Scott hub. Recently I changed the tire... a Goodyear 6x2.00 solid tire with a new Aero Classic 6x2.00 solid tire from Aircraft Spruce. Aircraft Spruce says that this is the replacement for the Goodyear tire. After 3 or 4 landings with the new tire I found the tire very loose on the hub. After removing the hub/tire... the hub screws were not loose.. I see that the new tire has 4 small knobs on the ID (which were partially worn down) while the Goodyear tire has 11 larger size knobs. These knobs are necessary to fit tightly to the Scott hub. It may be possible that I over tighten the axial mounting nut, but it seemed to turn ok when I tested it on installation.

For now I'm using the old Goodyear tire... its a little worn but ok. I don't know if Goodyear still makes the tire... Desser & a/c Spruce don't carry them. I'm not happy with the new Aero Classic tire... is any one else having problems with this tire??

      Re: Tail Wheel Tire Problem

N44305 has a Heath assembly with the Scott hub and 2 1/2 years ago I duplicated what you did - replaced a Goodyear with the Aero Classic from Aircraft Spruce. I noticed the tire was loose last weekend while cleaning mud accumulated by skillfully landing in the only soft spot on 2400' of turf. Anyway, it also is apparent that the wear isn't completely even, as if the camber needs adjusting. The leaf spring is straight and tight, but the bearings are moderately loose, both in the hub and on the fork. So I attributed the tire wear/looseness to the worn bearings and will replace them ASAP. Now that I know about the knobs too, I hope we can both find a better replacement tire.

Both sold in record time! Sorry to anyone else interested, I do have one tire left but it's the "4 bump" General tire, don't know if that's any better than the Aero Classic one?

              Re: Tail Wheel Tire Problem

With the Scott hub apart, inspection confirms the wheel bearings and axle (bolt) could stand to be replaced, but what I thought might be the 2000 (1/2" axle) looks to be its predecessor 3-24B (7/16" axle), so the 1883 bearing kit for the 2000 series ain't gonna work. Fortunately, the bushing on the fork is still OK, as Heath parts are also not listed in the usual places. I made the mistake of admitting to one of the local bearing distributors that the tailwheel in question was, in fact, on an airplane whereupon he told me he wouldn't sell them for that even if it turned out he had them. The friendly folks at Univair referred me to the Cub Club in Wisconsin, thinking they may be a source, which I will check tomorrow. These bearings have no identification on them - is anyone aware of a reference number that would be useful?

Look for a Kilian F350-14 or equiv.

                  Re: Tail Wheel Tire Problem

hmm looks like F350-14's are not available you may have to buy a -12 and put a sleeve in the ID to take the ID from 1/2" down to 7/16".

A peice of 1//2" tubing .027" wall will do it.

Thanks for the followup, Dave, as I found out the same thing and have had no luck otherwise. I was about to look into a plain, rather than flanged, bearing thick enough to fit in the nearly 3/4" deep recess in the hub, as an alternative. But that would probably be tough to find, also.

                        Re: Tail Wheel Tire Problem

Brown Bearings wasn't able to provide the F-350-14, and locally I could have ordered the -12 with 1/2" bore, but getting a thin walled sleeve didn't pan out. Instead we replaced the worn bearings with the -13s (5/8" bore) and used SYMCO SS-1420-20 sintered bushings to reduce for the 7/16" axle. Pix attached.

You can email LocateBallBearings.com or call them at 1-800-409-3632 and they will locate the bearings for you. Just give them the manufacture "Fafnir" and part number F-350-14 or F35014 whichever it is. Marv

Call Accurate Bearing. http://www.accuratebearing.com/ Give her the fafner #. She has the most extensive cross reference available. Tell her it's for a tractor. They don't make much money on one bearing, so be quick about it.
