Would anyone who has used the Stewart system make themselves known? Got some questions and there seems to be some varience between the videos on youtube and the manual - Mike

Re: Stewart system users?
John - i spent the morning composing a full page question on gluing, then decided to test gluing to both dry and tacky basecoats on both fabric and metal before posting the question. That way I can tell if I even need to ask - MikeMike Horowitz

Re: Stewart system users?
OK, I think I'm organized enough to frame my question. The conflict is between the videos on YouTube and the Procedures Manual.
In the discussion about gluing fabric to metal, the BOOK says let the cement tack up and then apply the fabric to the cemented area. The VIDEO says allow the glue to dry, then rub the fabric against the glue, then an iron to hold the fabric in place.
In the discussion of fabric to fabric, they both agree to apply glue to the first surface and allow it to dry. Then they wrap the second piece of fabric into place, use an iron to first hold the fabric in place, and then to form it. Here's where they differ: the BOOK says to lift the fabric, apply glue to the first surface, lay the fabric back down and then apply the encapsulating coating to the outer surface (wiping it down afterwards). The VIDEO does not mention that intermediate layer of glue.
So there's my confusion. I understand the glue encapsulating the fabric. If I understood how one layer of glue interacted with the other (in one case wet against dry, in the other wet against wet), perhaps I'd understand what they were doing.
If that's too confusing, perhaps I should give you a call??? - Or maybe I"ve made it ideally clear!!???
I set up an experiment downstairs two nights ago, but can't go down until I help the neighbors bail out their basement; this is a lot of water! Thank goodness for BeDry!- MikeMike Horowitz

Re: Stewart system users?
Here's the results of my experiment... I coated a length of tubing with glue, allowed it to get tacky and wrapped fabric around half, then encapsulated and wiped that piece. The rest of the tube I let dry for 24hrs,then tacked the fabric in place, then encapsulated it as before. Waited 24hrs and tried to pull it off. Neither budged.
Did the same thing with fabric on fabric. Same results. Doesn.'t seem to matter if the base coat is tacky or dry -mikeMike Horowitz

Re: Stewart system users?
Sorry I didn't get here sooner. I think you answered your question yourself Mike, but we always let it tack up before we glued again. That's what the manual says, if I'm not mistaken. That glue is a wonderful adhesive...sold alot of people on the system!

Re: Stewart system users?
One thought that occured to me Mike.... and it's a "technical, paperwork" sort of thought...... always go with the written instruction. THAT is the approved data...the video is a supplement. Clear as mud? ;-)
