Re: state of maryland aircraft tax
There must be a little more to this.
Have you contacted AOPA?
Several states ( NY among them) charge penalties & interest if the tax is not paid at time of purchase.
HOWEVER; it is NOT really due then.
It is due " When the aircraft is put into service".
When YOU started flying it.
Would that help?

It sounds like its time to move to a new state. I did that 11 years ago moved from the Gestapo state of Ill to Tn taxes are much less and we don't have a state income tax car tags are $24 dollars 2400 sq ft home property tax $450 hanger rent at county airport $ 50 a month and so on NO state registration for air craft and there is some work around Nashville AND the weather is MUCH BETTER HEAR !!!!!!!! can fly all year most of the time temp is not below 30 deg hope you can work out your problems Chuck1940 BLT/BC65 N26658 SER#2000

Re: state of maryland aircraft tax
"I just gave up"?
My guess is most Civil Serpents have no idea what a T-Craft is or how much it is worth.
I'm sure you can find allies on this but
letting the bureaucrats figure your tax bill is not an option.
Can you restart the process?

Re: state of maryland aircraft tax
Yeah the NC Rowan county sent me a letter asking for taxes on mine, I asked them if they charge the guy down the street for all the cars in his "salvage" yard (he never sells anything), they asked me where my plane was and after I told them in was in my basement they didn't bother me anymore. I did promise that if it ever got into the air I would be willing to pay taxes then.

Re: state of maryland aircraft tax
Interesting that you are having problems in Maryland with tax on your airplane. I also got a letter from them and they accessed my T-Craft at 50,000.00. I called the idiot who sent the letter and asked for the BOSS. She called me back and we had a LONG conversation. I suggested she look at trade a plane and Barnstormers. I also suggested she call AOPA and speak with the President. She did. A week later she called and said this fellow had been removed from his job apologized and set my tax at the cost of the airplane being 25,000.00. Which was fair. I have the letter from her and she was VERY responsive and intelligent. Her name is Sharon Bonardi and she is the Director. Her number is 410 767 1556. Hope this helps! (This transpired in October of last year.) All YOU need is proof of what you paid for it. IF it is not being flown but is in the process of being rebuilt you pay nothing UNTIL it flys. The Maryland law reads that it must be Based and OPERATED in Maryland to be taxed. If you have already paid this much money then you are due a BIG rebate! I am not sure from your message if this is the case. The fellow I originally spoke to got very smart ass with me and I then asked for his boss and was ready to call a Congressman. They work for US, not the other way around! They often forget this! JCLast edited by jim cooper; 04-09-2011, 19:14.

Re: state of maryland aircraft tax
Boy this sure makes me glad I live in Alaska! Regardless of aircraft value, local borough taxes are $75 per year if it is actually flying ... zero if it's a garage ornament. And ... we can go out and land just about anywhere without needing to worry about "approved landing sites" on state and federal lands.

Once you get the plane put together you are in luck in CA. If your plane is over 50 years old you can file a claim for exemption from property taxes of aircraft of historical significance if you display it 12 times during the year. In Southern CA many of the airports have display days designated for this purpose.
