  • Autofuel availability

    Hi tribe,
I may be flying from northern WI to Phoenix, AZ this spring. Is there a list of mogas availability across the country? My old girl does not like 100LL and purrs very well on autofuel. Yes I have the STC. Thanks in advance.

Where in Phx will you be keeping the plane? Our '46 is kept at Falcon Field in Mesa. Would love to see yours when you get out this way.

Mogas in Maricopa County here has up to 10% Ethanol in it so be aware of that.

It's always a good idea these days to call ahead and make sure the places that advertise mogas still have it. Not all AirNav data is updated as often as it should be since the FBOs listed self-report.

Have a great trip! (By the looks of the weather, the sooner you make the trip from the Great White North, the better!)

Hi there, Check out these links for Mogas Planning... At this time i do not believe there is any non ethanol mixed gas in Arizona. I have searched outside Maricopa county and can't even find it..

It has been rumored that about 4 oz. of Marvel Mystery Oil to each 10 gal of 100 LL will help to keep the valves from sticking in the guides and keep lead balls from fouling the plugs on a lawnmower. The downside is that if there is a lot of varnish from auto gas sitting in the tank it will cause it to flake off. That is what it was made for, cleaning the crud out of the Marvel carbs on the old cars. A lot of people swear by it and also a lot swear at it. I do know an exhaust valve stuck with too much lead on the stem and in the guide can really mess up your day and create a lot of paperwork.

Thanks for all the info. I am heading out to Bud Davisson in April to learn to fly my Pitts. I do carry some TCP that I can add to the LL if I have too. I know just flying around WI, MN and IL you can never accurately predict availability. When I start to look at commercial $$ and all the bullshi* I think a long trip in the Tcraft would be a lot of fun.

If you're coming down across Iowa, drop in at KVTI. We have Mogas and a 24/7 credit card terminal.

                Rick,
Mogas in Iowa with no ethanol in it; pretty incredible I'd say. Chuckle.

                  Re: Autofuel availability

Auto fuel without alcohol is available in quite a few areas here in central Illinois. Most of the larger fuel distributers here handle no alcohol fuel for marinas and owners of other older vehicles.

Strange as it may seem, every gas station in Iowa has straight unleaded available. The station I frequent the most has plain unleaded, E-10, E-15, E-30 and E-85 all on the same pump. Choice is good.

Rick, a friend and I was discussing that just yesterday. The new pumps get fuel from both tanks and blend it at the pump, thats why the different grades are available from the same nozzle.

As a favor to you guys I will refrain from moving back to Illinois (or Iowa). Sure as heck if I did they would take away the ethanol free gas. Chuckle.

Yep, this station is the only one in town that has the new blend pumps. All the others just offer unleaded and 89-octane E-10 and a 2 have 91-octane premium. My wife's Jaguar uses premium, so we frequent different stations.

So, if the guy before you got E85 and you want Real Gas, how much ethanol ends up in the can?

                              John,

I'm not sure how much ends up in the line, etc., but at a station I used to use I put about one-half gallon in my car tank to clear the line and then filled up my cans. Another place I now get it has dedicated lines for each fuel.

This can be aggravating because when I fill up my bikes with premium, I am always getting 87 octane that was in the line for starters. I usually search for a pump where the last person pumped premium so I at least get what I pay for.
                              Cheers,
                              Marty
