Glenn John : Dec 29th, 2010 Compilation of facts and information by Forrest Barber
Ohio Senator (30th District) Jason Wilson had contacted Forrest Barber about information on John Glenn’s solo flight; Forrest explained that he had copied a lot of old records many years ago at the New Philadelphia (PHD) airport
during a re-dedication in the 60’s and would look them up.

TO: Senator Jason Wilson: We talked right before Election day about this 70 year celebration of John H. Glenn doing his first solo flight. I have collected a lot of information about the solo in New Philadelphia, Ohio on May 1st, 1941. I have copied his CPTP records and have them here at the Barber Airport

NC26642, a 1940 Taylorcraft BL-65 ser# 1984, was test flown here in Alliance by William Crawford on July 16, 1940.
This aircraft was purchased by Tuscarawas County Aviation and used in the CPTP (Civilian Pilot Training Program) there at the New Philadelphia Airport in Ohio. This airport is about 35 miles SSW from Alliance, Oh.
Notation in records of first flight on Glenn "Eager to learn, relaxed and alert & good co ordination" that says it all! Harry Cleaver ran the operation at New Philly for many years.
The above notation was by Glenn’s Instructor Wallace "Wally" E. Spotts
(#40711) who may still be alive). I am seeking any information on this aircraft or information on Wally Spotts.
It appears that John Herschel Glenn (original signature) soloed for 15 mins. on May 1 , 1941 after 4:30 Ground Instruction and 8:45 of Flight Instruction. John Glenn then moved onto the next phase at Tuscarawas County Aviation headed by Harry Clever , with his original signature. Private Pilot License issued on June 28th, 1941.
I have traced the airplane to Indiana where is was listed as "destroyed" . I have found this may not be true and some of her may have survived. I am doing more investigation every day.
I have contacted Terry Henry at the New Philadelphia Airport, Oh, Harry Singleton at Knox Airfield, IN and others in that area.
I can round up another BL-65 if necessary for an Event at New Philadelphia
I have talked with sources at Valparaiso, Indiana Airport; Knox Airport , Starke County about the owner of this aircraft for many years, David R. Vallow ( now deceased) . NC26642 was listed as “destroyed” . I know the Lycoming was replaced with a Continental and am still pursuing any parts, logs, etc…
I have contacted two restorers in the event the Jason Wilson group can come up with funding for having the aircraft flying again.
We here in Ohio are hoping to get John Glenn to speak at our ECOPA annual banquet ( www.ecopa.cc) on March 11th, 2011 .
This is first official announcement of this Event , I need help!! Any information can be sent directly to me at the Barber Airport & Taylorcraft Foundation or share on this thread. Any BL-65 near to N26642 , ser# 1984 may be asked to attend this event ( date to be determined , Around May 1, 2011)
More as I get it. Bye Forrest
