  • barometric pressure = wind

Interesting pressure map this afternoon. Don't believe I've ever seen one with so many isobars so close together. Michagan must be getting a bit of wind.

Horrible winds in Minnesota. Pressure at Big Fork (North of Grand Rapids) was 28.21 at 2:00pm.

Not sure where it ended up at yesterday but it was forecast to be the lowest or next to lowest recorded pressure in MN . Similar to what would be found in a hurricane.

Got both generators ready. Secured doors on all buildings. Frankly it was a non event, gusty winds & light rain. We were blessed here in Alliance, Oh...

Very strong winds here at Lino Lakes, turned all of the floatplanes sideways on their tiedowns, everything from a C206 on Whip 3900's to champs.

                Re: barometric pressure = wind

We were 600 miles away from the center of that giant low yesterday, and we still had winds that were flipping trucks off the Interstate. Amazing.

My question: I know the theory of low pressure in a hurricane (hot water), but how does a low that deep develop over...Canada?

                  Re: barometric pressure = wind

All winds are a result of temperature differences. The sun heats, or doesn't, and the stronger the difference in temps the stronger the pressure differentials. I assume there must have been some (relatively) warm air over Canada somewhere, and some very very cold air somewhere else. I myself have always been a little miffed at the Canadians sending their cold air down to Pennsylvania each Winter! ;-))
I went hunting in northern Saskatchewan several years ago, in the late Fall, early Winter; that was an amazing experience, hit -30 degrees Farenheit every night, and a high of about 0 Farenheit!! We lived in a tent for the week...

I'm finally home on rest period and sick of putting powerlines back together! Gotta get some rest and get in the Jet Ranger for more damage assessment in the A.M. yea....Upper Peninsula of Michigan got some wind....Thousands still out of power.
