Pilot Mike Legler crashed his 1946 Taylorcraft airplane in an unnamed lake east of Seward nearly 16 years ago - and lived. The plane was recovered in July 2009. They plan on restoring it back to flying condition. To view a slide show of the recovery go to link.

I wonder how the struts look and the attach point at the fuselage ref the AD. Humm!! Looks alot better than I though it would. I wonder what it looks like today and what was usable.

If you can buy a decent one for $15K, I wonder what the logic is.

        Sentimental value somehow?

It seems to me that logic and reason is often absent in regards to aviation.

I personally like a challenging project. No,there usually not economically wise, but very self satisfying when complete. Hell, I just like a good challenge.

Every man or woman should have some sort of project going till the day he or she goes west. Better than sitting on the LazyBoy napping all day in front of the TV. Tell you wife it will get you out of her hair.

Logic?? , reason?? does not apply in this case. What is N number? I WOULD like to checck the struts and attach fittings.

Re: 1946 Taylorcraft airplane recoved Alaska

I noticed from the pictures that it is N95608. That caught my eye because I used to own 95618. I have been an occassional reader here, but finally decided to join. I had my Taylorcraft from 1973 until 1986 and spent 2 years of "spare" time recovering it during that period. It was my first airplane and I loved it. The factory was still going with Dorothy Ferris at that time, so the recover/restoration was easy from a parts perspective. Of course, mine was flying when I took it down for recover, not like the one in the pictures!

I am now flying as a Sport Pilot with a Legend Cub. I am a CFI. Once in a while I get the urge to have another Taylorcraft.
