My son Paul Jr. is (finally) learning to fly as a "Sport Pilot" in our '46 BC12D-1, and if the weather works, I believe that we'll be making a dual x-country flight to Alliance next weekend! He's 25, and he wasn't even a gleam in my eye when I went the first time, around 1974. Holy smokes, I was about his age then! I actually don't think the navigation will be difficult for him; I think the airplane knows the way!

Any Tcraft flyers from NC, VA, MD planning to attend? Would rather have company than a solo flight [ working on my kitchen pass for Saturday ]

Photo By SubmittedAl Barber, father of Forrest Barber and founder of Barber Airport, is shown as a test pilot in 1946. He died on July 7, 1976. The first Model A Taylorcraft arrived July 7, 1936, in Alliance from Butler, Pa., where it was built.

Owners of Taylorcraft airplanes and former employees of Taylorcraft who built the planes will reunite this weekend for the 39th annual Taylorcraft Fly-In and Reunion, to be held today through Sunday at Barber Airport north of Alliance on Union Avenue. The fly-in has been held at this location since 1972.

Russell "Duke" Iden, who will celebrate his 95th birthday this year, heads the employee group.

The Taylorcraft Owners Club, headed by Steve Krog, will bring owners from all over the world to the gathering. Forrest Barber, executive director of the Taylorcraft Foundation and owner of Barber Airport; his wife, Patricia; and their families all pitch in to get the airport ready for this event.

The foundation registers the arrivals and meets with them on Saturday evening for their annual meeting where the annual awards are presented.

This year a combination fly-in with the Ohio Aeronca Aviators group headed by Brian Matz and his family will be held. Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 82 will conduct its Wings & Wheels Fly-In, which was postponed from the first weekend in June.

The show will feature Corvair engines on the ground and in the air, breakfast at 7 a.m. both days hosted by EAA Chapter 82, and lunch. Corvair engine rebuilders Mark Langford, Larry Flesner, Mark Jones and Joe Horton may appear.

One of the favorite parts of the event is the Fly-By around Don Pancho's on West State Street, held at 8 a.m. Saturday prior to the Early Bird Breakfast of the Taylorcraft Old-Timers. More than 15 airplanes flew over the group last year prior to their meeting where Iden and the Old-Timers reminisced about the years in Alliance when Taylorcraft flourished with over 2,200 employees. Iden started work at Taylorcraft in March 1937.

This year will feature the first Taylorcraft that arrived in Alliance, on July 7, 1936, and the last F-19 Taylorcraft, built by Dorothy Feris in October 1979.

Many of the pilots will attend a campfire this evening at the airport after attending a fish fry at Shorty's restaurant on Union Avenue within sight of the old factory.

During the day on Saturday, many of the pilots will fly their airplanes in the vicinity of the airport and around the former factory and the Alliance vicinity.

Barber will fly an aerobatic routine for the crowd and take the original prototype Taylorcraft around town. This ship is owned by the family of C.G. Taylor.

A church service in the open air will be conducted by the Rev. Forest Yoder of Louisville at 9 a.m. Sunday.
