...Not sure what this is worth but I have a fully-cowled Lycoming O-145 and recently installed shielded NOS ('47) plugs on it. They fit neatly under the cowl with no need for alteration. (*Whew!*)
-BUT- the shop IA mech who installed the new shielded harness had to cut tops off newer (run-out) shielded plugs and attach them to the harness after tapping the inside surfaces to make it all fit. You'll have to ask him for more details.
I also have a new (postwar) set of cowl clamshells with no bumps but more Dzus fasteners. Wanted to close the gaps under the L.E. around the nose bowl. The original ones (never drilled for nose bowl fasteners) were letting in too much air.
