  • axle does not have hole for cotter pin

I am starting to feel bad for sponging all of the information here but i think this will be the last for awhile. I am willing to trade if anyone has corvette questions i am your guy.

Replaced the right landing gear on bc12d got every thing hooked up bearings greased wheel on and then the cotter pin wouldn't go through. I looked and found that this axle is a bit different than my other side. There is a key way cut but no hole for a cotter pin to go through the axle nut and axle to keep nut in place??

    Thank you Eric

    Eric,

I suspect the hole for the cotter pin is full of old hard grease and you just can't see it. There had to have been a hole through the axle for a cotter pin when it was new. Either it is full of gunk, or someone welded it up.

My suggestion would be to remove the wheel and clean the end of the axle with some solvent. On my project plane the hole in the axle for the cotter pin is about 1/4" from the very end. Good luck!

Look close. there may be threads on the end of the cotterpins in the hole. If it came from a salvage yard they may have put a impact and socket on the nut and removed the nut without taking time to remove the cotterpin. It can be done, and it has been done. Time is money in a salvage yard and they do not always consider the end user of their parts. Marv

The end of the axle is hollow. Try sticking something about 1/4" diameter in there. If there is a cotterpin still in the hole, you should hit it when you stick something into the end of the axle. Even if it is only hard grease, this will help break it up so that you can clean out the pin hole when you find it.

This is funny...I lost my cotter pin hole too. Even though I'd just removed the stinkin' cotter pin myself. I knew it was in there somewhere. But removeing the nut for the first time in 60 years (?!) musta filled in the hole with old petrified grease and gunk...darned if I could find it. I had to use an awl to stab around 'til it finally poked through.
