    engine

I'd always heard he was a good guy. Dan Jockett our ASI is a pretty good guy as well but scared to death of making a mistake which translates to headaches for us. I went to the Continental site to check on TBO's and Continental recommends the A65 TBO at 1800 hours or twelve years which ever comes first. I had never heard of the calendar TBO before. They say that is because gaskets etc deteriorate and because of corrosion etc. Of course they give disclaimers about proper maintenance and so on. The engine I'm looking at was apparently majored in '91 which is not so long ago but outside the TBO so at least I have a negotiating point.

Wow! Positively spring-chicken-esque! In 1998 I had a C90 that was at 1700 hours since major in 1965....

What really matters is how many hours in those years. If it's 50+ hours per year, great. If it's 100 hours one year then 3 years idle, not so good...

"Scared to death of making a mistake" yeah, the pervasive problem. [insert favorite lawyer joke here]

What does spring-chicken-esque mean? About the engine times, this engine seems to have been used reasonably consistently, but my borrowed boroscopes (note plural) will hopefully show up any pitting or scoring.

Well, "spring chicken" is a term us "old timers" use to refer to something young.....

Oh, I see. You mean a greasy, oily, smelly, ear-splitting, ozone depleting, environment poluting, thrashing mass of metal is like a spring chicken. Got it.

John, I checked out the spring chicken today, and found blow by out the carb on the compression strokes--intakes. The logs were good, yellow tags and all, overhaul worksheet showing what had been done. I wanted to do a compression check but my borrowed tester broke. My opinion besides the blowby was that the compression was a little low compared to other 65's I'd pulled through--strictly subjective. Other warning flags--no time logged since two previous annuals, no compression taken at annuals, oil black as burned molasses. Ran great--they let me take it for a spin. They were very irritated that I didn't buy it because of the blow by which they couldn't hear.

Now what do I do I wonder.
