  • Speaking of Shock Cords

You know, I don't even know what the "replacement period" for shock cords is. I have replaced Two sets in my life, and I have been flying Taylorcrafts almost continuously since 1980. I just keep an eye on them and they seem to last forever. One set was in really bad shape was on the poor abused first Tcraft that I bought, and the other was on the BC12 that I have now.

On deliberation I think that cold weather must be what wipes them out as the moderate winter temperatures here is the only thing I can think of that is different from other parts of the U.S.; daytime temps are rarely below 60F or so in the winter.

Of course I pick my AI's VERY carefully. I get the ones that concentrate on the things that might kill me, but I would lay my ticket on the line to protect their livelihood if the bureaucrats jumped them for some petty oversight.

    Re: Speaking of Shock Cords

I guess your's are well fitted. I had a problem with my F22A shredding them every 20 hours or so then I found out two things, firstly my supplier in the UK (LAS ) was selling me ones for older T/Craft models, despite his insistence that they were correct for the F22A (Rob Lees put me right on that one - Thanks Rob! )

Secondly they were chaffing on the bodywork (floor ) under certain conditions so we cut away some metal and also replaced the under carriage bumper rubbers with Auster ones ( Was unable to source correct T/Craft ones) and this combination seems to have done the trick.

For anyone with a F22 series aircraft the correct part number is 1110 and as I mentioned in the other thread I finally obtained them from SBC in the States.

For the benefit of other T/Crafters in the UK the Auster guy is CJ Baker, Carr Farm, Thorney, Newark, Notts NG23 7DQ tel 01522-778617. He apparently bought up most of the Auster spares in the UK when a previous supplier went to the wall so if you are stuffed for a T/Craft part well worth checking with him as it seems certain parts (particularly for the older models are close enough to do the job for you! as it did for me in a time of crisis!

      Re: Speaking of Shock Cords

Sorry typo error in last Post when I quoted the part number for the Shock cords I missed out the A (Taylorcfraft F22A series ) as it only relates as far as I am aware to the F22A series Aircraft as they are Tri Gear.

I have heard of some folk using the 9090 HDX which seem to work ok as well and may fit a wider model range. I understand that the part number 1110 is heavy duty so doe's not flatter poor landings!

I was also told ( This will get the fingers busy I guess! ) that the stiffer heavy duty shock cords are better if given a choice as they help to prevent the wings lifting in cross wind landing situations? Any views?
