RE: 85hp ,90 hp etc. engines. They are OLD engines. 1930's technology. It is and will get harder to replace parts. If one is going to all the trouble of putting on a new engine, do it RIGHT and install what should have been there in the first place! An 0200. These crates were ALL underpowered. Again....they were produced during the DEPPRESSION! No money available. AND they were primarily meant to train people so a 65hp was acceptable. Today its pretty boring. This is only my opinion.after you spend time in a Citabria with 150 hp, you realize what your missing, not to mention a super cub. JC
I have a friend who has a 180HP Husky with 26" tires and Cleveland brakes. It is a real blast to fly. I love to go into some of the back country strips in the local area.
But when I get out of the Husky and crawl back into my little 65 HP Taylorcraft, I get just as much of another kind of enjoyment. There is something about the majic of that wing out there to each side of my head that amazes me in what it can do with only 65hp. The F4 Phantom is proof that, with enough power, you can make anything fly. I think the Taylorcraft with it's little "underpowered" engine is a little piece of aeronautical majic.
With all that said, If Terry ever gets an O-200 stc for the Taylorcraft, I would like to put one on. I like to go to the back country high altitude strips with camping gear. Up there the A-65 loses a lot of it's majic.
I can recall an individual who flew over the sierras usually around Bridgeport.
His little 65 pre war tcraft with 2 two hundred pounders did it more easily than his sons 0-200 in a taildragger C-150. This eveningTail up in 200' and in the air at 500'. about 7 knots of headwind. T craft makes any HP look good.
I'm doing some instruction in a Luscombe and it seems like it takes forever to get the tail up.
