  • More Ercoupe Cups

    Hi Gang,

I did a little searching, but couldn't find the info I needed here on the forum. Apologies if this is duplicate info. Got my Ercoupe cups from Fresno Air Parts. They're beautiful, but the price has gone up significantly! ($45 ea. plus s&h)

I'm looking for info on what goes from the plug to the wire end that screws onto the cup. I have the die to re-cut the threads. Just looking for any help to figure out what makes the connection. Photos?

    Thanks in advance.

    Josh

Well, it is called a wiring harness. It has little insulating cylinders on the end with springs in the tip, called cigarettes, attached by a connector that has a swaged fitting so it will be electrically continuous with the shield.

You have to install "new" (different) shielded harness, or there is no point in using the cups. If you kludge it with the old wiring you will have wasted your money on the cups because the ignition will still be noisy.

My experience is that mag will still be noisy anyway because spark plugs you have to use do not have resistors and the amount of noise they generate just overwhelms the shielding.

Anyway, check suppliers on line for "ignition harness," eg: Aircraft Spruce, for a photo.

      Josh,

If you want to save some money and only get four of the cups, I believe some of the members have used those only on the top side of the cylinder where clearance is an issue. Then they switch to the top mag only to use the radio. Just an option...

Hi, this link should take you to postings of pictures I put on the site several years ago of this process. I now have several hundred trouble free hours on this.

The shielded harness spring end simply presses against the top of the spark plug from the side.

I usually only use one cup. Left front of course. It works fine ; remember some radios do not have good noise rejection..... IF you can find an old Comm-Spec handheld, you do not have to use shielded plugs , Comm-Spec had enough noise rejection built in that an antenna in the aft section of the fuselage worked just fine.

            Thanks.

I guess I should have explained that I'm converting a currently shielded system with cowl bumps to a shielded system with no cowl bumps. I was unclear about the connection between the shielded harness and the plugs.

David and Judy cleared it up with a photo.

Thanks so much, David. Just what I needed. I guess I didn't dig deep enough!! Beautiful pics and they illustrate exactly what I needed. Far simpler than I thought!
