Re: Rough Running at Full Power

Since you squirted some prime and got black smoke, sounds like over rich, not lean as I (we) first thought.

I have seen a float stick in the down (open) position.

As a matter of fact, someone here had that problem, because I remember writing here about a Chevy I had that would do that and saying that I would just bang the carb on the side and then it would come loose and the engine would start running correct.

Could your float be sticking? Do you see other indications of over rich besides the reaction to primer that you observed?

Hi Andy, so what was the outcome?

      What did you find?

Yipee, it is fixed . And the winner is....

It was the carburator. Despite the fact that I had done a bit of work to the carburator, such as cleaning, changing the float needle and setting the float level, there were a couple of plugs I could not remove and hence some passageways that could not be checked for obstructions. I have changed the carburator to a spare that I had and now I have been able to get a full 5 minutes of ground running with no problem.

After the old carburator is dry, I'll use some heat to get those plugs out and I expect to find some crud or something else wrong.

Thanks for all the help folks.

        Andy
