I listened to a bit of ATC (Google for ATC Oshkosh) this afternoon. Made my feet wet just imagining myself approaching and landing. Gotta be a thrill, but the potential for screwup seem soooo high - Mike

I got to fly in a Bearhawk here today. (felt like I was cheating...) Wow, that thing does perform! On final coming back in, we landed mid field with a Cirrus under and behind, and a 172 just ahead. A formation of XX number of RV's and T28s flying by at all angles too. The Bearhawk pilot is a B737 captain and she said it was an experience for her. I was right seat and got to do a little air work, but mostly was a spoter, but it was a blast. This place is a busy as I've seen in 30+ years. Sorry many of you couldn't make it because of the weather issues.

And Forrest, get well, we were all asking about you at the Vintage dinner tonight.

I am putting nose seals in a Cherokee gear today and getting into the big RIB-FEST in Alliance. The Piet gang made it in , left two ships at Wakeman .... This weather is really unusual.

Yeah, it's always exciting landing at Oshkosh, with all the traffic and thousands of people in lawnchairs along the flightline watching your landing. When I flew in Sunday morning July 26, the controllers at Fisk told me runway 27, but I requested and got runway 36 for less crosswind and shorter taxi to Vintage Aircraft Camping. I was cleared to land on 36L behind a flight of seven Pietenpols coming in from Brodhead, but one of them ground-looped or something, and the tower shifted me over to "runway" 36R, the narrower taxiway. Three-pointed it without embarrasing myself.

As I was taxiing out to depart Oshkosh yesterday, this was my radio exchange with the pink-shirted controllers at runway 18:

ATC: "White and blue Cessna 140, are you ready to go?"

Me: "Don't call me a 140, this is a Taylorcraft!"

ATC: "OK, Taylorcraft, cleared for takeoff runway 18 right."

Me: "Taylorcraft cleared for takeoff 18 right."

        Third voice: "Is that Joel?"

Me: (Confused, thinking it's one of the controllers) "Yeah, this is Joel in the Taylorcraft."

Third voice: "Hey, good to see you again -- see you next year. This is Suzy, by the way." [Suzy Kryzanowicz, "Taylormaid", apparently taxiing out herself and breaking in on 118.9.]

So I take off, shaking my head. As I'm climbing out, I hear this:

ATC: "Maroon Taylorcraft, are you ready to go?"

        Familiar voice: "No, I need a run-up."

ATC: "Is that Suzy? Pull ahead and do a 180 on the taxiway to do your run-up and advise when ready for departure..."
