  • New AC on parts for Vintage Aircraft

"In a move intended to help keep vintage aircraft safely maintained, restored and flying, the FAA has issued new Advisory Circular AC 23-27, Parts and Materials Substitution for Vintage Aircraft, dated May 18, 2009. The AC, created by the FAA’s Small Airplane Directorate in Kansas City, Missouri, was a joint effort by the FAA in consultation with industry representatives including EAA and EAA’s Vintage Aircraft Association."

If I'm reading this right, this will let us use parts STC'ed "for like aircraft" or to SAE or ASTM standards with only a logbook entry to note substitution of materials on minor parts & alterations, or 337 for major alteration / substitution. Aside from making most of the hydraulic cables and replacement windows on field ("From NAPA Aircraft Parts, Lowe's Aviation, or Home & Aircraft Depot") legal now, how will this affect us?

How do they define "like aircraft" - will we be eligible for parts STC'ed for a PA-12, or only for other Taylorcraft models, for example?

In other notes, F-19 spars are 1/16th inch taller than BL12-65. Better to find this out when assembling the hardware prior to trammeling (when your strut attach fittings don't fit), than when your wings are covered, and you're wondering why they don't fit on the plane....

I think you are reading this correctly, but read-on and take note that you have to have all of the STC data and you have to have the STC holder's permission to use the data.

This is a good step by the FAA, for once.

I wonder if this will let me use F-19 gear legs and mechanical brakes on my 46' BC12D with a 337 and proof that nothing else changes. I have asked a couple poeple who say they think so but my FSDO can't not tell me yes or no.....go figure!

        Dot,
I haven't poured over all of it yet, but it appears a bit redundant. The items you referenced were covered under FAR 21.303. I don't understand why we need an AC to cover subjects that have been allowed by the FAR's for 50 years.
The best thing the FAA could do is release the manufacturing data, if they have it. And release all of the STC information on the old unsupported STC'c.
It's curious that the EAA has such an interest. They have had very limited exposure to vintage aircraft. From there actions over the last decade I think it would be better if they stuck to experimental, not standard category airplanes.
