  • Pietsch T-Craft

I attended the annual airshow at our local airforce base this weekend. The thunderbirds were there (loud and fast), the A-10 Warthog demo team (impressive) and others, but the real star of the show, at least for the pilots in attendance, was Warren Pietsch in his clipwing Taylorcraft. A really remarkable preformance.
Pietsch parked briefly in front of the fence where we were standing and I got this photo. It shows some of his modifications. I was told he has a 180 HP engine. The rudder is balanced. He added a second set of tail wires, big beefy looking streamline wires. The wings are very short, only a couple feet longer than the ailerons, and it looked like he had added extra ribs in the wings with very close spacing of the rib stitching. The ailerons had a balance section on their outboard ends and spades underneath. Hydraulic brakes, serious looking wheel pants, and a very small little tailwheel. Skylight, big D-windows, observer panels in the doors. About as sweet a T-Craft as I've ever seen.

Great airshow! Hats off to you, Mr. Pietsch

    Re: Pietsch T-Craft

    One of my favorites.

Warren's airplane is one of only 2 "short-wing" Swicks. IIRC the total reduction is about 14' vs. the 7' something" of the standard Swick. Mike told me that to his knowledge, there were only 2 short-wings built - Warren's and one by Bud Judy(?) that everyone has lost track of.

It seems to me that there are actually 13 ribs per wing, it just looks like a lot because they're so short. It really goes.

Bud Judys ship was based at Denman field north of Warren, Ohio as of last summer. Dick

Good to know that it's still around.

You wouldn't happen to have any pics would you?
