Tailpost: Bushing

The bushing shown in the attached picture of Capt. Jon’s new tailpost appears to come from his old tailpost; it looks as if he cut well around the bushing and simply welded the old bushing/tube combo to the new tailpost. That would certainly make the fitting easier.
However (assuming the tube thickness to be .035), wouldn’t that put the alignment with the upper bushing (mounted on the vertical stabilizer) off by .035?

Why would you do all that unnecessary work? Just make a new one or cut the bushng/holder off and weld it to the new tailpost! It never ceases to amaze me how much work people go through, just to keep from doing something the simple way! And to answer your question, yes it would cause a slight misalignment.

because we don't know better? actually, having the bushing on a plate sounds like an easy way to get it aligned.

And to answer your question, yes it would cause a slight misalignment.

I'd say it probably wont show up with any wear on the bushings as far as .035 misalignment....but it's more work to do it that way than it would be to just grind it off there, put a nice new pin and bushing in, and use the rudder to align it...then you know it'll be right. Just don't get too carried away welding so that it "moves" on ya...get it tacked well on each side and "sneak up on it".

I'd say it probably wont show up with any wear on the bushings as far as .035 misalignment....but it's more work to do it that way than it would be to just grind it off there, put a nice new pin and bushing in, and use the rudder to align it...then you know it'll be right. Just don't get too carried away welding so that it "moves" on ya...get it tacked well on each side and "sneak up on it".

1. I was thinking the heat of welding would hurt the bronze bushing. Am I incorrect?

2. It looks as if the bushing is spaced away from the tubing. Any idea if they put a spacer in and welded over, or simply filled in the gap with welding material?

3. Correct me please if I'm wrong; you are putting the vertical stabilizer and rudder in place to located the bushing position; you put the pin in place, now you are going to tack weld the bushing to the tailpost, check for movement, then disassemble. Makes sense; I guess I was overly concerned about heat.

1. Weld the bearing tube, ream the inside to the correct size for the bronze bushing, install the bushing.

If you look at the drawing you'll see a 1/16" spaced between the tube and the post. Dick

On my L-2 the slot lines up with the drain hole in the tail spring upper support.
