    Alaska BBQ "Redo"

    The Alaska T-Craft Fly-In and BBQ that was originally scheduled earlier this month (when no one could come will be taking place this Sunday afternoon in Skwentna from 2:00-5:00. This time around we have several folks planning to come and we have planned some special "flying skills" challenges. All are welcome in any aircraft type. The brats, chips, and sodas will be provided. For Anchorage pilots, we will be gathering at the Lake Hood strip gas pumps at 1:00pm. Hope to see you in Skwentna!

    Hmmm, sounds fun. What kind of "flying skills" are we talking about? I'm in Anchorage for a bit, and might be tempted to come.

      Well, just finding Skwetna would be the first skill! I think we'll also try some flour bombing and maybe a short take-off/landing contest. We're also going to grill some brats and feast a little. Hope you can make it! Steve.

        Jim..I haven't put my floats on yet so if the weather looks good I should make it over tomorrow.

          I just returned your call Steve and left a message. Thank you for the invitation. I would love to join forces but it is too short of notice for me being that I work in the retail grocery business and weekends are difficult to schedule off from work... I know that these events need to happen when we have a strech of good weather and everyone needs to jump on it when the opporutunity is there. Next time I hope!

          You guys have a good plan to foster some comradery and compare performance of these little birds. I would really like to attend.

            Alaska Tribe...trust you folks that make it to Skwentna will have a great time...WX looks good from here North of Kenai. We just got back from Outside and are still catching up. Plane is on skiis...sitting on dirt. I appreciate the call from Steve Long...I really do need an "airplane fix"! Have a fun time over there and take a bunch of pictures. Thanks, Dick

                  Well, akndrifter was probably the youngest T-owner, and I'm sure he lives the farthest away -Bristol Bay. It was good to meet him and his lovely wife and they proved to be skilled flour bombers, though Larry from Wolf Lake and his son won the event with a drop of 18 ft. from the target. There was some grumbling that he needed to have a little deducted for busting the altitude floor though (150 ft). It was tough maintainning altitude though, with gusty winds, even over the runway.

                  We had 9 T-craft altogether and one cub. Not too many of the brats were burnt and the weather was truly great! Scott, the cub driver, brought really good smoked salmon and Erin and his son brought homemade cookies.

                  I hope Jim will post some photos,and I'll leave it up to him to post the details of Karl's emergency landing on the way back into town. Karl and the plane are safe though, so I was relieved to hear that. Hope you and Dick can make it next time, Jim. Steve.

                    We had a great time and thank you Jim and Steve and everyone that showed up. I haven't done anything like that in years. maybe I did drop down a little bit in the flower bombing,but I don't think I was the only one here's a couple of pictures, one of the flight out there and one of the line of planes.

                        Thanks to all who came up to Skwentna. We'll definitely do it again next year so mark your calendars for the weekend AFTER Mother's Day. We're also talking about a "splash-in" later this Summer and I know of at least 3 Skwentna attendees with lake cabins! (You know who you are )

                        This weekend featured two 'father-son' flour bombing teams, a 'husband and wife' team, and even a 'father-in-law and son-in-law' team. It was a great time.

                        Here are a couple more pictures and a link to a video of the event (must see!).

                        Disclaimer: Forgive the 'bouncy' landings...the wind was really swirling at the end of the runway.

                          OK one question! Are all the trees way over 150' tall?

                          PS: I think that 150' minimum altitude was broke most of the time! At least that is what I see on the video. And yes I loved it!

                            Yes...the "150 ft" rule quickly went out the window with the flour bombs! Unfortunately we had to send back the "Free All Expense Paid Trip To Hawaii" first prize that we had planned for the winner.

                              Great pictures and videos. I was really looking forward to Hawaii after fishing this year! Oh well, maybe next year!
