I never fly cross country without a map with a line, marked with checkpoints, and even plotted so I always know where I am at. Sometimes I use the GPS but the weather has to really suck and the map is still in my lap being used.

        Re: Alaska Bound T-craft

Jack is home safe in Fairbanks! He got in 9:30 PM local time, safe and sound.

The only problem for the whole f light was on the last leg of the flight, one of the significantly healthier external trim tabs I made for the airplane somehow decided it didn't like the angle it was flying at, and decided to rotate 90 degrees on the mounting shaft. Once that happened, the force from the air flow pushed it aft until the mounting shaft busted off at the first screw hole. A repair to the shaft and a new trim tab are in order.

Congratulations to Jack for making a fantastic flight. I'm glad to say the airplane ran well and reliably for the entire flight. There's one more nice little Taylorcraft in Alaska!

Kevin, I fly with a map too. The batteries have never gone dead...not even once.

                  Re: Alaska Bound T-craft

                  All,

Thanks for all of the good wishes and being available just in case something happened. From Tehachapi CA to Fairbanks AK took 32 hours of flying, 3 day delay in Prince George for a snow storm, 2 day delay in Sunriver OR for high winds, 2 day delay in Yreka CA waiting for a new GPS. Two legs were 3 1/2 hours long. The new TSA computer only manifest to cross the border was very difficult to work with. Customs was very understanding and helpful with all three airplanes that cleared with me. In time the system will probably be easier to work with. The little bird ran perfectly, oil pressure and temp were just as steady as could be. I drew lines on the charts with marks every 50 miles (30 min) to keep track of where I was. 95 smph all the way. It was a great trip.
