All of our snow melted and then it rained and was 40F. All of the run off went on top of the ice. When I first got to work that morning there was about an inch of my 8" maule tail-wheel above water. Later that day all of the water drained under the ice and we were left with a rock hard slab of semi smooth ice.

OK, how'd the water get under the ice? (Good thing it did: the alternative is having the bottom 6" of your gear frozen in a block of ice...)

Re: Floats Or Skis What To Use
It was previously 40+degrees so the edges of the lake began to open up. I think it may have drained around the edges and and then down the outlet creek. Where else could 6" of standing water have gone in a day? I was afraid of being frozen in 6" of ice so I pulled T-Rex off that morning and put the wheels on. The owner of the other t-crate said he had seen this before and left his on the ice (still about 18 to 24 inches thick). Now the tails of his skis are frozen in about 2" so it's not to bad. We just got another 3" of snow last night so the skis may go back on soon. Happy Flying

It is amazing how much difference there can be in a couple hundred miles. I live in northern North Dakota, not that far from Limo Lakes, MN, but we have never had a melt, and all the snow we have gotten since Oct-Nov is still here. This is the coldest winter we have ever had, the next coldest winter was in 1933 or 1936 they say. And we are still all covered with a 2 to 3 foot blanket of snow, on the level.

Cropduster...Al Gore would NOT be pleased with your evaluation of the climate. You CLEARLY have not been paying attention to our current environmental plight! You need to get in touch with the times (and your INNER self) and ACCEPT the fact that the glaciers are melting and we're all going to DIE if we don't start sending our money in to pay for our T-Craft Carbon Credits! Get a clue man...it's NOT cold, EVERYTHING IS THAWING!!!
PS: Ski flying in Alaska was exceptional today. Mt. Redoubt is still threatening to erupt. OF course, this will emit more CO2 into the atmosphere since the invention of the internal combustion engine...but PLEASE, don't tell Al. It will totally screw up his speaking/fundraising schedule!

Re: Floats Or Skis What To Use
We got another 6"to 10" of nice dry dense snow on thursday. The skis are back on. The snow felt bottomless and every landing was seemingly perfect. Winter is back for now but the warm temps will be back this week so time to pile on the hrs. while I can.
You AK guys got room for another up there? May be relocating. Hows the lob market for newly licencned A&P's?
