I would like a new bottom cowling for my 1946 BC12. The factory does not have a current supply, what have others done to replace their cowlings?

What is the staus of yours (repairable, unservicable)? NOS cowls are extraordinarily difficult to find. There is an expert sheetmetal guy here at 1T8 (Bulverde, TX) who makes a lot of chicken salad out of chicken s###. Send a picture if you can. DocDoc TF #680

I had a bad experience trying to use the guy from STL sheetmetal. After sending him a check for a part I had not received it several weeks later. He seemed to be somewhat disorganized. Maybe he has gotten better, but I have decided to not do business with him anymore.Richard Pearson

Re: bottom cowling for a 46 BC12
Richard,
I've had two good experiences with Tim Wood of STL Aircraft Metal Arts. Had him make bungee covers a few years ago, and then had him make a crankcase baffle just a few weeks ago. Excellent workmanship, fair price, and for the recent order, he sent an invoice for payment by check after shipping the part.
His address has recently changed. He said he lost his shop space at the 502 Bellerive Blvd. address, and until he finds new space, his address is 12172 Perida Court Apt. D, St. Louis, MO 63128. Email and phone still the same, I assume.Joel Severinghaus

Re: bottom cowling for a 46 BC12
Someone gave me an induction filter fairing that was supposedly made by the STL guy. It was given to me because it did not fit on his airplane, and (again supposedly) not completed when he got it.
There was a large relief cut on both sides of it, where it apparently needed to be fit to the cowl and then welded or riveted together.
In addition to this welding, it also needed to be hand-hammered and bent and trimmed and fit and fiddled with quite a bit (maybe half a day's worth overall).
Once it was done it looked good and was a nice addition to the airplane. But by no means was it ready to mount on the airplane when I got it.
It was not me who bought this part originally, so I have no proof that it was made or sold by STL. It was told to me by someone who was on this Forum, but nothing more than that.Taylorcraft : Making Better Aviators for 75 Years... and Counting

Re: bottom cowling for a 46 BC12
I recently bought the induction faring, bungie farings and gear leg farings. All are good quality, ready to mount. Transaction was good. I ordered the parts, he gave be a quote, he sent the parts with an invoice and I paid the bill. All of this was in a timely fashion. I found him good to deal with. He answers emails and provided the parts. Much better than some people I have tried to deal with.Ray
