  • Shinn Brake Photos

For educational purposes, I am posting these photos comparing the early pre-war 3/4 inch wide brakes with the more common 1 inch wide. Notice the difference in the adjustment method.

My Dad and I are still looking for a narrow left side brake for the 38 B model he is restoring. If you think you might have one, please contact us. Enjoy the Pics!

    David,

Thanx for the great pix! It appears that I have yet another variation? These are off a prewar that was parted out. Not sure of the year.

Appears that you have the late 39 through 46 1" wide rear adjusting type. this is the most common. See the OD color ones pictured in above Post

Knowledge so far is the 3/4" brakes were used on Model A (when they had any) and were carried over to the early B through 38 and part or all of 39. Notice that you have to remove the wheels to adjust them! The 1" version was on every side by side Model through 46 and can be adjusted without removing wheels. When properly set up they will easily hold a full run up on an 85HP and probably a 100HP. In just the last month we stopped a Tri Pacer type landing (80mph) executed by a crazy old man in the 41 and it didnt take too much distance. The bigger your eyes get the faster you can stop!
Trying to figure out the wheel thing now. It may be that the rear half is the same for either the 3/4" or the 1" but not sure of that one yet. Designators found so far on Shinn wheels are 6C4, 6C4B, and 6C4HB.
