Re: Pix of Strut Fitting Oddity

The front and middle tangs show damage - probably from the bolt (or drift) being wanged in as Mark suggested. The integrity of the whole fitting is suspect - a job for gas, TIG or MIG. Doc

Anybody seen a fitting that looks like this? This is a shot of the back side of the left lift strut fitting after blasting. It looks to me almost like the thing was punched from the back or maybe mis-punched in manufacture?

Despite the back boss being tweaked the way it is, there's no axial play in the bolt when it's inserted-- not sure if that's due to the integrity of the front boss. Anybody want to render an opinion about whether the whole fitting will need to be replaced?

      Thanks in advance,

      Josh

Interesting, look into the slot for the rear strut and inside on the left side you can see what looks to me like debris and a dent from the "punch thru" at the rear.

Yes, and what looks to be metal pushed and folded into the center hole.

Also there may be a crack on the landing gear attach fitting. Look up and to the right of the nut where the fitting is welded to the longeron. I see a rust line that may be a crack.

Thanks for posting these pics. It helps one know what to look for in regards to damaged fittings. I hope your repair goes smoothly.

        thanks,
        David

This is the worst I have seen that did not fail completely . You are indeed lucky, sum it all up, who had it what did they do to the ship, how did you get it etc.... send to me directly .
This is for my knowledge not to get anybody in trouble. However IF I were you somebody would have a lot of explaining to do!
Anything can be repaired , chose the best A&P , welder , and IA you can locate. Look the whole airframe over completely.
