    T-Craft Picture I had to share!!!

    Hi guys,
    Got back this week from the Reno air races. Had a ball! Crewed 2 Pitts in biplane class for the Flyin' Low Race Team, Race #6 "Miss Dianne", and Race #20 "Let the good times roll".
    Got to see Warren Pietsch do his thing in his Clipped T-Craft 3 times and really enjoyed it. Nice to see fellows like he and Jon Mohr flying an airplane, not a 400 HP missle through the manuevers. Got many great pics, but found one I had to share. We were staging for a morning heat race on Saturday while he was performing. Managed to get a picture of him shredding the ribbon inverted from a long way off (Hence the heat distortion in the picture) while pushing the Pitts with my other hand. I'd rather be lucky than good any day!

      Thank you!!! Those are nice pics. Are those spades I see on the ailerons in the inverted picture?

        Yes, those are spades, or in his case full blown snow shovels. They also hang about a foot below the wing. You can also see on the second picture that his ailerons are balanced/weighted at the tips. His roll rate was impressive even at low speed.

          Small angle on the rudder. Interesting.
          Too bad no one has the foresight to build and certify this kind of Taylorcraft. Perhaps it is wishful thinking, but I bet it would sell.

            Anyone else notice what appears to be several degrees of washout in the wing rigging? The AOA at the root appears to be noticeably different than out by the ailerons. Actually since he's inverted it's temporarily wash-in

            Washout is probably normal for most of us but you'd think an acro airplane would be rigged at zero...

              You can see the shadow of the spade (shovel) in the second pic. on the bottom upper wing. Larry

                Here are a few more showing his spades and aileron deflection. I didn't get any pictures on the ground, was too busy. Wish I would have documented it better.
                Also seems strange to mount the spades at the tips from an aileron load/twist standpoint. I've installed them on Citabrias/Decathlons and they usually mount them around where the control rods attach to the ailerons. They obviously work on his though!

                    Hi Chris,
                    I made my first trip to Reno two years ago with my daughter in her Pitts. We had a great time and she got a fourth as a rookie. This year she was killed on Saturday flying a Cassutt. I am getting my Tcraft going as a tribute to her and all she means to me. See: WWW.Ericasimpson.com We can't stop because some flys west loving what they do.

                        From a former IF1 race pilot, please accept my sincerest condolences on your loss.

                        I can only speak for myself (but I believe many others would agree) when I say that if I were to lose my life racing I would want all my friends and family to keep flying, keep racing, keep building airplanes, or whatever they loved about aviation.

                        We in the Taylorcraft community offer our love and our condolences, and the ongoing fraternity of old-school pilots who love this old-school airplane.

                          I am so sad for your loss. I read all the wonderful information on Erica's website and she was a remarkable woman! My daughter also flys high performance planes and she is never far from mind.
