    Re: Taylorcraft Owners training class?

Mike Rice and many others have a great idea, it is time that we put this stuff down as fact. I ahve been too damn busy with family health & money problems not immediate but close members. I am working with Kent State University on a documentary and an internet newsletter on tips for older aircraft, in particular Taylorcraft .... My intererest will really peak as the weather goes cold again. I will be using the Taylorcraft Regional reps real soon.

      Re: Taylorcraft Owners training class?

It used to what a owner of a homebuilt could do their own work.
what is needed for FAA and insurance companies to accept owner doing their own work is some creidibilety. We Are not out to take the work away from the AI's but making it possible for the liitle guy to keep his aircraft.
EAA had good idea with the antique aircraft rule and here in Canada we had the owner maninece rule what DOT closed the door on thanks to FAA and some other political issues!
If a person have a trade simmilar to a aircraft mechanic Auto mechcanic, millright machinist for example, the basics understanding of mechnics are there. and some basic aircraft skills can be demonstrated what is needed for maintaining his aircraft, a basic course in structual desing and work. fuel supply, ignition principals and work skills, fabric covering painting riveting, just a few I can think of.
If I can show a good performence in this basic skills should I not be able to maintain my aircraft. Maybe a AI or FAA inspection has to be called upon every so often ( 5 years) intervals to look over the plane to make shure everything is Dune in a OK way.
This shuould not alow me to work on own Jet or twin or DC3, simple aircraft No constant speed prop, no retactable gear, no more when 200 hp. and NOT FOR HIRE
A person shall not be alowed to work on any not owned, and flown by him.
No work for HIRE, no work on not owned aircrafts. and a valid pilot license in the category of aircraft to be maintaned.
Repairs to engines, no rebulding, repairs to magnetos, if proper testing can facitaded. Carburators, the same.
      electronic ignitions, the same.
      Just food for thought. Len

        Re: Taylorcraft Owners training class?

Remember: who may "work" on an airplane? ANYONE!
it is the person that may "return it to service" that becomes important. I am pushing for the 2 yr or 100 hour Inspection format. It is being discussed NOW for the non-complex ship. A&P is different from IA..

          Hey Forrest,

How about scheduling a training class at next year's flyin at Alliance. Since you won't be doing the arrangements, perhaps you would have time to host the class. I think there would be enough volunteers to help out and video it.
