  • How does B12-A771-1 ...

Folks - several weeks ago, I had an opportunity to visit Hank. He kindly looked over the ship and commented on the mounting of B12-A771-1.

For those without a parts list, this is a wedge shaped sheetmetal rib-like thing that fits between the fuselege and the butt of the wing (aft of the wing bolts) and is covered by a 2" piece of sheetmetal that wraps around the wing root (which is tightened with a loooong screw)

On both sides of my ship, there are screws in that sheetmetal strip that hold the wedge in place, but the wedge does not connect to either the wingroot or the fuselege or the wing bolts. The front of each is rough, like there may have been a brace there, but there are no matching broken-off sections under the wing bolts

Can anyone shed light on how that wedge-shaped fairing should attach, or is what I've described the way it came?

    - Regards, Mike

    faring attachment

    Mike,

I just went through this. It is attached from the inside, thru the fabric into the faring, with sheet metal screws. Then, the wing root seal is wrapped around the wing root. In my case, I added some pk screws along the edges of the wing root seal to get the seal to flatten out more along the wing and the fuselage. Before securing same, I put some neopreme u channel on both the inside and outside edge of both root seals. Hope this helps.

I'm having trouble visualizing this. From the inside of the cabin? - Mike

Mike, the wing root filler (that wedge-shaped device) has two tabs on the top side that lap over the wing root rib. Couple of pk screws hold it in place on the root rib.
Then that wing root fairing has a couple more pk screws through it (from the top) into the root filler.

Shouldn't attach the filler to the fuselage, only the wing.

Definitely NO attachments to the wing bolts.

Mine have always(since I've had it) been attached to the fuselage via a tab on the fore end of the filler. Right or wrong, the filler is nailed to the fuse with what look like spar/rib nails. There is no overhang on the rib side to attach to the root rib on mine. They haven't gotten loose or come off, so I'm not touching it unless it is a real no-no.

            farings

            Mike,

Like I said-from the inside! There should be a tab on the forward part of the v shaped faring that lays on top of the top longeron. From the inside of the cabin there are three 1/2 sheetmetal screws that go thru the fabric into the vertical braces of the faring.
When I attached mine, I put some oversized washers on the screws prior to going thru the fabric and into the faring. These screws don't reall support much-just seem to hold everything in place until the root seal is put on. After the seal is in place, this faring is pretty well locked in place. I think that it is more of a filler than anything. Be very careful when putting in the SM screws because the faring material is .016 soft and won't take much torque on the screw threads. If you have any more questions or would like more info. give me a call @ 405-348-6643 CST.
            Best Regards
