I never use the primer. Turn the prop until I get a drip and will usually the 1st or 2nd pull after that.
For Hot starts I shut her down around 900 - 1000 rpm with the mag switch.
When I come back I just turn on the mag switch and pull her thru. If it dosen't start the 1st or 2nd time then I'm going to get tired. Normally starts
easy about 75% of the time. The others times it will range from about a dozen pulls backwards 1 to who knows how many times. I think the longest its taken to get started hot was 15 minutes.

Old coils in the mags will never give you a good spark.
She maybe runs good in cold weather, or untill the mags get's hot and when DEAD, untill she cools of again. so long it is running you maybe be ok but if don't have impulse mags you get lot's of exercise in your arm.
I learned in my younger days on outbouards.
New coils my man, saves your arm.
Blast tube pointing on the mags, will keep the new coils cooler and they will last longer.

I just pull mine thru 4-6 times with the trottle closed all the way for a rich initial mixture. Crack throttle and pull thru (not flip) one blade. 99.9 percent effective. The old girl has some other problems that fortunately don't effect her flying, but she is really good about starting.

Every once in a while something will get under the steel needle valve and I will get a dripping carb. Always goes away.

Hi Darryl, I do 1/4 shot in summer on "cold" engine.

Usually starts 2nd swing cold or hot.

Now that I said this it will start on the 40th swing from now on.

              Re: Won't Start When Hot

Dave, when we move into summer, kinda medium weather, I sometimes use a little prime and I notice that the engine has to clear itself a bit. So as soon as I can I change over to no prime and just leaving the trottle closed to pick up a little gas with a few pull-throughs. Seems to unload the plugs and run better quicker. If it is a little cooler and acts "dry" I go ahead and give it a little squirt. Using the prime is a quick start every time, but it seems to be a little cleaner start without it, any temp. above say 75 F. I think the idle mixture may be a little on the rich side on this 85, but it runs so good I don't intend to mess with it.
