  • To the folks doing a recovering....

Talked to my IA this morning about removing the old glue from the wings (my intention was to clean the wing up, then invite him in to tell me what had to be done).

I was moaning and complaining about how long it was taking and he said, simply give it a lick with MEK to feather the edges of the glue and then leave it alone; prime right over it. His logic was 'if it's sticking to the metal, that's good; and follow-on layers and tapes will hide the fact that I didn't get all the glue."

Check with your own IA, but does anyone see anything flawed in this logic?

    - MIke

PS: this follows the logic with primer; if the primer is adhering to the metal, there is no reason to try and take it off. I'm going to 2-part right over it anyway.

PPS: for everyone using stripper to remove paint/glue from the wings - remember it will also strip the varnish off the wood so be prepared to do a bit of touch-up.

Yes and no Mike. The main problem is that you'll have glue under the primer, so that's not letting the primer adhere to the metal. Also, most of the glues are MEK based, so are compatible, but are you certain that the glue they used is? I'd be more apt to do it right the first time and not have a problem down the road.....nobody said this would be an easy task.

Just soak a few paper towels in MEK and let them sit on the old glue for 5-10 min.... it will soften up and come off more easily with a plastic scraper and scotch brite. Worked well for me in the past!

Kinda wonder about putting 2 part (not flexible) over glue (flexible?)
Cracks if any pressure put on it?

How about a little test using some of your 2 part or other epoxy stuff over a glue spot or two. Let it set for a few days then beat, scratch, and poke at it some. See how it holds up to abuse.
