  • Good News - Strut Fitting AD

Had my new A&P do a good look at the surface pitting on our fittings. He visually determined it to be only a few thousandths into the material.

So.. I called up Andy McAnaul and had a chat. Andy said according to the factory drawings the material used for the fitting was .095" +/- .005" 1025 mild steel.

He said if my corrosion goes no deeper into the metal than .005" then it still meets factory specs and passes the AD.

I believe the pitting only goes .003" or .004" into the fitting in any given area.

So what I need to do now is determine the material thickness at the pitting sites. Any ideas??

Also I DESPERATELY need a copy of the factory drawing for the part. I need it for documentation purposes so my AD can attach it with the signoff.

DJ, there is a micrometer specially made for pitting, grooves and the like. It was part of our normal inspection set at Pratt and Whitney years ago. Described as a depth micrometer that had a pointed mandrel. Worth the bother in your case, as the pitting 'appears' to be negligable? Just take the word of your A&P and get on with flying. Happy landings!!!

From the pictures you showed I was surprised your IA didn't pass it on the spot....it looks like minimal pitting...clean it up...treat it with corrosion inhibitor...and fly it.....if a single pit is .005 deep, how does that affect the integrity of the fitting....IMHO...it doesn't

Chances are that there are two large pits in the front and rear of the fitting, large enough to pass a 5/16" bolt !

all is good! corrosion pits in the fitting went no deeper than a few thousandths. Pretty much surface gunk.

However in the process of stripping the paint and looking we noticed the landing gear fitting gusset on the right side was corroded slightly too much. Planning on pulling the gear tomorrow and replacing it this week.
