  • Ignition Wires

Thanks for the offers of help via phone calls, etc. I appreciate it. It was pretty frustrating to be held back by a couple of lousy wires.

Brad Moffett lent me a used harness of an engine he had in his shop to confirm that was the trouble.

I had already ordered the parts from Gary at Aero Parts and Supply in Dallas. He pulled some strings and got a couple harnesses built at Aero-Lite. Super-nice guy and quite knowledgeable about these older airplanes.

She's up and running again and I'm on my way home.

Thanks again, guys! With good people like those I've already met, I know my experiences with this airplane are going to be good.

    Re: Ignition Wires

    Josh,
I hope you made it home OK.
Doc and I looked at your plane for a possible group buy, but we went another route. The plug wires were working perfectly back in May.
Your plane has about the best brakes you will ever find on a Taylorcraft. Although I did not fly your plane, I taxied it a lot and it did well in that department and the full power run up was good. I know you can get the carburetor set up a little better. Joe likes his starter fluid, but is is not necessary if things are set up correctly.

If Doc and I were not already working on four taildraggers (3 of them Taylorcraft) we might have still purchased Joe's, but I'm glad you have it. It needs a good home.
    Best Regards,
    Mark Julicher

        Re: Ignition Wires

        Mark,

the brakes WERE good! The right one went away day one. Sort of odd. I think something internal might have broken. Not knowing anything about the guts of Shinn brakes, I'm not sure what the deal is. I'm about to find out, though. I will say that the left brake is still superb. I did look into it enough to figure out that the cable is intact and moving the lever at the wheel end.

Yeah, the starting fluid! Gives me the willies. It starts just great if you close the throttle fully and pull through about 5-6 blades, then crack it open and switch on-- one good pull and she starts right up. No problems.

The flight back was great-- aside from a little lousy weather here and there. She's back home and in my little hangar waiting for me to get back from work.

Thanks for the call and the support.

        Josh

PS. Doc, Joe told me you have the donor fuselage from NC24369! Is there anything buildable left of it? Just curious, more than anything. I have my hands full with my new ship!

          Re: Ignition Wires

Just found Rob Lee's writeup on Shinn brakes. That's going to be good reading for the next couple of days!
