  • BC-65 Performance

With today's hot weather, I decided to climb on up and check my craft's performance in climb. My prop is a metal Sensenich 74-CK-48. I checked the rate of climb (feet/min) at indicated airspeeds of 50, 60 and 70 mph. (Airspeed calibration is within a couple of mph according to my GPS). My takeoff weight was 975# at sea level and estimated at 955# when I got to 9,300 feet (density altitude of 11,000 ft). Here is the numbers I got by plotting a bunch of data points and drawing the best line averaging them

    Climb in feet/min
    Density Alt. 50mph 60mph 70mph
    ----------- ----- ----- -----
    3000 580 800 460
    5000 510 690 400
    7000 440 570 330
    9000 360 410 260
    11000 290 340 190

Temperature at 9300 was 10C, 50F -- A lot pleasanter than 90F at sea level.
    At 9300 (density 11,000) I indicated 80mph at 2100 rpm. (94 TAS - confirmed by GPS)
    Pretty impressive to me
Now I'm thinking about an Annapolis to Seattle trip in the fall!!
