  • L-2 A/D questions

Hi All! I have a 1943 L-2 Taylorcraft and my A/P mechanic (well his helper anyway) is telling me I need to REPLACE my struts per the A/D. From what I read here they only need to be inspected and from what I read in the updated A/D I see no where were it states ALL must be replaced.
My question is what is right? I was ready to go order new one and have them painted, I am glad I looked on the forum here first if there do not need to be.

Please help. Thank you for reading!

    Re: L-2 A/D questions

    Don,

    The AD states:

    Applicability
    (c) This AD applies to all serial numbers
of Taylorcraft Models A, BC, BCS,
    BC–65, BCS–65, BC12–65 (Army L–2H),
    BCS12–65, BC12–D, BCS12–D, BC12–D1,
    BCS12–D1, BC12D–85, BCS12D–85, BC12D–
    4–85, BCS12D–4–85, (Army L–2G) BF, BFS,
    BF–60, BFS–60, BF–65, (Army L–2K) BF 12–
    65, BFS–65, BL, BLS, (Army L–2F) BL–65,
    BLS–65, (Army L–2J) BL12–65, BLS12–65,
    19, F19, F21, F21A, F21B, F22, F22A, F22B,
    and F22C airplanes that:
    (1) Are certificated in any category; and
    (2) Do not incorporate sealed wing front lift
struts, part number (P/N) MA–A815, Univair
    P/N UA–A815, or FAA-approved equivalent
P/N, and sealed aft lift struts, P/N MA–A854,
    Univair P/N UA–854, or FAA-approved
    equivalent P/N, for all struts.

If you have an L-2, L-2A, L-2B or L-2M it was certified under Type Certificate A-746 - TAYLORCRAFT, INC. -
    Revision 5
    TAYLORCRAFT
    (Army L-2, L-2C) DC-65
    (Army L-2E) DF-65
    (Army L-2D) DL-65
    (Army L-2A, -2B, -2M) DCO-65

and is not part of the applicable list on the AD. No action is required.

With that said, your struts are not sealed so have your A&P inspect them as they should at every annual.

This is a link to the TCDS

      Re: L-2 A/D questions

Thanks, Ron. You are correct. You can add the TG-6 and all model "D" ships (DF-65,DL-65 and DC-65) to the exempt list. Dick

        Re: L-2 A/D questions

Not really exempt just a completely different strut system taht the AD does not apply to. Get another IA.
