That's impressive takeoff performance Dano. Looks like the 90 hp makes a tcraft a nice floatplane.

Re: Float Takeoff Sunday May 11 08

Yea guys...i'm pretty happy with it...I average between 7 and 10 seconds on takeoff solo with full nose tank and me 205lbs. My 85HP Tcraft was usually around 15 to 17 seconds. The engine prop combo works well for dragging it onto the step quickly. Again this is a C90-12F with Sensenich 76AK-2-40 prop. The really impressive thing is that I get off the water performance like a 90HP cub and still cruise at 95 to 97 mph on floats. The Taylorcraft makes a very fine float plane.

I'd be very curious to hear how your 7142 McCauley prop compares to the Sensenich you have on right now.

If I get a chance I'll bolt it onto the 90 and try it....I suspect it will spin up okay...but I measured them with a tape and there is 4 3/4" difference in length....granted the McCauley has square tips and the sensenich round....but the bigger disc moving air probably gets me on the step quicker. Are you on floats yet Gord?

If there is a 4 3/4 inch difference then either your 7440 Sensenich is more than 74 inchs or your McCauley 7142 is less than 71 inches... Did you manage to find a Sensenich longer than 74 inches?

Not on floats yet, but hopefully I'll be good to go this weekend.

A lttle of both Gord....the props measure approx 70.5" for the 71-42 and 75.25 ALMOST on the 76AK-2-40...????? I don't know if it's because of the rounded tips on the Sensenich or what....But that's what they tape out at?? Turns out to be a good thing in this case. I'll measure them one more time...but last summer I did it and I'm almost positive that's what I measured....I'll report back if I'm wrong.

I think your Baumann floats have a lot to do with the excellent take off performance. EDO 1400s would probably add a significant amount of time to the takeoff run.

The fluted bottoms on 1320 floats always do better than the flat bottom 1400s.

Your Baumann floats give you good displacement and fluted bottoms.

You could be right...they are a nice float....it's basically like having 1320's with more displacement...1536# per float. Oh...I forgot to correct myself on the prop Gord...I re-measured it and it is 74 3/4" not 75 1/4"....I get about 2450 rpm on takoff...so If it were a little flatter I could get full HP...but with takeoff perfomance like this and still a near 100MOPH cruise...I'll leave well enough alone.

I agree, the prop you have on seems ideal. Why sacrifice cruise when you already have excellent take-off performance.

Dano's performance has alot to do with the floats. I have the only Baumann 1420 float which are actually 12" longer then Dano's 1500's and displace 30 pounds more. I have an 0200 in my 46 T-craft and with me and my 18 year old son along with 20 gallons of gas I had a takeoff time of 21 seconds. I would recomend the Baumanns anytime, Dano tried to tell me this a year ago and I didn't listen and had edo 1320's on my last t-craft.

Most of the 'Old Timers' up here in Northern Ontario swear by the EDO 1320s. Some prefer EDO 1400s or PK 1500s for floatation/stability reasons (depending how many times they've been caught in high winds).

I think the Baumann 1500s are the best design out there (fluted bottoms + floatation). Ed Peck has also built some experimental EDO 1400 variants with fluted bottoms, apparently they work well too.
