  • Anti-collision light for F19

    Hi,

I'm looking for an Anti-collision light for a 1978, F19. The strobe I have, which appears burnt out, is the Model 1400, White Anit-Collision light by Scientifico of Newport Beach, CA. It was mounted on the vertical stablizer. I'm hoping to replace it with a like unit. Any ideas where I might find one?!

Also, I was successful in having the lift struts in for Radiograph testing, recently. Removed from the airplane, I took them to Twin Ports Testing in Superior, Wisconsin. They were determined to be rust free.

I'm new to the discussion group. Thanks for having me.

PaKosz, Years ago a friend recovered his F-19. During the downtime, I looked at his so-called strobe. His was a Scientifico, same as yours,I believe. I opened it up and expected to find some "electronic" wonder. It appears to be made up of a flasher unit out of a car, a 50 uF capacitor (15 volt), a projector bulb and some wire. I made a duplicate out of exactly those items. Works fine and just the same.
If I were you, I would remove the burned-out bulb and locate a replacement or similar bulb at a good industrial electrical supplier (or on the internet...just search "projector bulbs") The one I built worked fine with a Sylvania FCR 12 volt, 100 watt bulb. Make sure you don't touch the bulb with your fingers, so as to keep oil from getting on it. I don't think you have a major problem...if it turns out to be the flasher or capacitor...those are easy to replace.
This reminds me of an electrical device I used out in the bush...It allowed you to run regular light bulbs and universal motors(like an electric drill motor) off of the alternator on your vehicle. It sold in Popular Mechanics for around 3o bucks...When I took it apart...it proved to be made out of a duplex electrical outlet (79 cents), 3 or 4 wire nuts, some wire and a cheap toggle switch...all inside of a metal gangbox with a cover plate...probably 3 bucks worth of materials...sometimes things are not what they seem! Forrest,

I'm away from a telephone often with work in the spring. For this reason it can be difficult for me to recieve calls. I'll call in to the airport and catch you one of these days. I appreciate your help, and it's a pleasure speaking with you.

        Dick,

I, and two others, disassebled the unit recently. It didn't appear too complex, as you mention. We experimented with a continuity tester and borrowed bulbs. It was unclear to us why it wasn't working. I will attempt to enlist the help of someone who is better with these things than I am. If it's possible to rebuild the unit I may end up doing that. There is some oxidation along the lower edge of the circuit board, however to me it doesn't look to be significant. One fella suggested that I attempt to dry the unit out in the oven at the lowest setting - fun with electricity. Thanks for your reply.

It was the cheapest at the time , the alternator was automotive too , fix it and fly it!! OR like we discussed , put a new one on top or bottom.
