Re: wing tips
You can make a significant performance improvement without putting on big ugly fiberglass turn down tips, and keeping the original fabric look. Just make a new "tip bow" that is not rounded on the rear. The trailing edge should be straight from the aileron all the way to the very tip and the leading edge should be rounded into a line rearward and outboard as shown in the sketch.Originally posted by marc View Posti'm looking for after market areo dynamic wing tips Marc
This new shape will require one or two additional supports to keep it rigid, and moving the half-rib rearward in order to keep the airfoil relatively true.
Keep the "upswept" shape (front view) so that the top of the wing is straight and the bottom raises upward into the tip.
Recover with fabric and paint to match.
This will serve to reduce an adverse pressure gradient near the tip, which means it opposes the formation of the tip vortex instead of helping it. It will also serve to move the two wingtip vortices a little further apart compared to the stock setup, which means that the EFFECTIVE wingspan (the distance between the tip vortices) is larger.
You should see a little better climb and low speed performance, and no loss in cruise speed.Attached FilesTaylorcraft : Making Better Aviators for 75 Years... and Counting
