  • moving versus selling

    I am faced with moving about 575 mile in the next 4-6 weeks.

    It's going to be a hassle.

    I planned to fly the the t-craft originally but that may be difficult now due to the timing of this event.

    Anyone know the cost of ferrying? I am also thinking of selling the t.

    Any thoughts or advice is appreciated.

    Dave

      From where to where? On a nice day this could be a one day flight. Would you sell the plane because you don't have a place to keep it? If you do sell, you know you'll be kicking yourself for the rest of your life...

      But sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

        Dude, pull the wings off and trailor it,(worst case) I've been dragging my precious around for years and keep getting work done. I bought it from a pal and bought it again in the last divorce.I don't even think in those terms, don't weaken.

          Dave,
          I could use a break right now, hell pay my meager expenses and call it done. If you need help, let me know, PM me and I'll send you my phone number. You may already have it from the L-2 gear ordeal.

            Dave,

            None of us can know all the details, but there must be some way you can arrange to keep it. How about flying it to an intermediate place where it can be stored until you can pick it up? Or getting one of us to either meet you to help or fly your bird???

              Re: moving versus selling

              Thank guys for the advice, I see I have some PM's also to look at.

              Didn't mean to be obscure with the post.

              Looks like I will be working from Wendell, NC (near Raleigh) starting in July.

              Its a 575 mile drive.

              We are busy now on this end arranging everything and I have been concerned that by the time I have time to ferry it we will be into the hazy crappy northeast summer weather.

              Was thinking about paying for ferry, but have no clue what that costs.

              It's unlikely I will be able to steal away for a few days to ferry prior to July.

              I suppose I could leave it here and wait for better pilotage weather.

              My experience has been that after June it gets pretty hazy here.

              Thanks, more later, Dave

                Re: moving versus selling

                Dave- I live in Burlington NC which is abotu 40 miles west of Wendell. I'd be happy to ferry it for you and I may have a place you could keep it until you found a hanger closer to you. I've flown these little planes all across the US and really enjoy the adventure. 500 miles is an easy 1 day trip as well. PM me if you are interested.

                Flying is easy- to go up you pull back, to go down you pull back a little farther.

                  Re: moving versus selling

                  Hey Dave and Eric,

                  I have a daughter in Asheville and would like an additional excuse to pay her a visit. So maybe we can arrange a good time for me to fly to Asheville, NC, pick up Eric in Burlington on the way back, fly up to NY, and then we formation part way back to Maryland while he goes back to NC.

                  While the summer in the NE often has some weeks of lousy, hazy marginal weather, there are usually some very nice weeks with just summer CU and decent (for the east) visibility. As long as there is no push to fly at a particular date, one can always get from here to there.

                  I'm also planning to get to Alliance in July this year and may take a little extra time to visit friends a hundred or so miles farther west.

                    Re: For the record

                    I need to back up and retract a quote I coined about buying back my T-crate from my last divorce. A poor choice of words to discribe a painful division of properties. I had a supportive wife for 16 years and without that I'd have never realized my dreams. I appologize to the tribe and all the supportive mates in this family.

                      Re: moving versus selling

                      Thanks Chris, Eric, Brian, Dan, Kew and everyone for your offers and responses, moving has not been resolved yet but it looks like it may get easier.

                      There have been a couple of helpful changes on my end, mainly that the house buyer wants to purchase my tractor & implements plus other appliances. The move is going to be easier and it looks like I have about a 20 day open period (till June 19) where I could take it down. I may have time to do that.

                      Will see how that works out. I just got back last night from a drive down to NC. Went to see my ill mother inlaw VA and we took one trailerfull down to NC, it should be the last trailerload of two. I took the Aeronca down on a trailer 3 or 4 weeks ago. We have owned the new house for about 3 years and have taken a 16' trailer load each time we visited so now much of our stuff has been moved already.

                      I drove back thru the Shenandoah valley, that might me a nice flight route, it avoids DC, that has to be good.

                        Re: moving versus selling

                        I live pretty close to the Shenandoah valley and have flown over it several times. It is nice country. The worst terrain is east kentuckyand parts of WV. Once you get into Va and into the smokies it is a little more forgiving. If your flight plan brings you anywhere close to 9I3 stop by and I'll buy ya lunch.

                          Dave:

                          On your way down, squeeeeze between Frederick Maryland (FRK) and the Presidents playgound of Camp David "P-41" on a 240 degrees magnetic to north of Leesburg ( you will be just a few mile out of the ADIZ) and then go south and east of Winchester VA. If you need a stop, go south east( approx 120 degrees magnetic) towards Warrenton VA ( HWY was W66) use the Casanova VOR as a reference. The Warrenton Air Park is south of the city of Warrenton' a 10 miles on the approach for runway 15 for HWY. Hangar, frienship and food availalble. If overnight, local Hotels are close by ( no room in the shak). No fuel on the field but plenty of NON-Ethanol MoGas in 5 gal mugs. If you prefer 100LL, it can be arranged. I will be out in the west coast from 6/14 to 6/21. Send me a PM if you need further info...or not
                          If you want to continue, just fly south from Leesburg towards Front Royal VA find the skyline drive on top of the blue ridge and follow it down to NC ( try flying in between the two hills for a good look at the Shanadoa River and valley ) and over the Smokies... Its a great flight
                          Regards and good luck

                            Re: moving versus selling

                            Thanks again everyone for advice and offers.

                            I got lucky, the house buyers bought the tractor & implements, washer, dryer, riding mower and some furniture so my move got a lot easier and I had some free time.

                            A cold front moved thru very early on Wednesday morning 6/11 so I left at 6:30 am from Poughkeepsie,NY, took this route;

                            Poughkeepsie,NY=> Quakertown,PA=> Frederick,MD=> Winchester,VA

                            Onlly made one stop at Winchester,VA at 9:15 am after 2 hours 45 minutes flight time and stopped 30 min for gas.

                            Then left Winchester,VA at 9:45 am, took this route;

                            Winchester,VA=> Culpepper,VA => Louisberg,NC, arrived at Louisberg at 11:45 am after 2 hours flight time.

                            Total flight time was 4:45, elapsed time was 5:15, distance 523 miles.

                            Average ground speed just a fraction short of 110 mph and top speed was 127 mph. IAS was always about 99 mph

                            4.90 GPH and used a quart of oil (that surprized me) on a bc12d w/A65.

                            Pilotage all the way but I had a GPS with me as security blanket and checked it from time to time, that's where I got all the trip statistics.

                            Going just after the front went thru was like riding a wave! I had an average tailwind of 10 mph!

                            Oh yeah but I had to tell Potomac approach a few times that no I was not a helicopter!
