  • Jack Browns Seaplane Base

To all of you guys flying floatplanes......

I am so jealous! While I was at Sun-N-Fun I took a trip over to Winterhaven and Judy and I each got an hour flying in the Cub on floats. What a hoot!!!

It was so fun I am thinking about going down again next year for the whole course and getting the endorsement. Might be kind of nice to get out of this miserable NE Ohio weather in February.

Here's a question for you and anyone flying a cub on floats. How'd the weight and ballance work out, i've never actually run the numbers but I don't think you could put aqua 1500 floats, a c-85/o-200 and two full sized people in a j-3 and have enough fuel for a 1hr checkride pluss a 1/2 hr reserve. Adventure Seaplanes winters in Florida near there and they do float rateings and also have solo rental available. They spend summers at Surfside where I work and base T-rex. Come north this summer get your rateing and then we'll go splash arround in T-Rex.And then then a thourogh debriefing .

I worked out good for me, they had to bring Chris Brown in to ride with me for the rating in the Taylorcraft N70K many years ago. I am sure you have never flown a ship over gross......

Me, never. A bc12d with a c-85, full electrical, 24 gallons of fuel and two people, I think this puts me a pound or two under gross on my 1320's . The fact that an FAA examiner would knowingly fly over gross on a checkride is a little questionable. But I guess that is the benefit of having an on staff examiner who's last name is Brown. But I will say again I have never ran that exact combination of aircraft, engine and floats so for all I know they may have just the right formula.
