  • Tolerton Spar Logo & Spar Lamination Pictures

    Forrest,
I tried to get a better picture of the Tolerton logo on the spar, but it's pretty faint. The other spars are in another hangar so I'll see if any of them have a clearer logo and get a picture. I recall you wanted one for the foundation. Also a side shot of the laminated spar I replaced. Where I cut it in half, there were 6 pieces of wood making up that spar.
The owner has a few origional sales brochures that I didn't see examples of in the photo area. One showed a picture of the optional stick control. The pilot side had a yoke and the copilot side had a stick as I recall. I'll try to get some good scans for you and you can add them to the foundation archives.

      Forrest,
I'm sure Bob would be a wealth of info. That many pieces of wood with the grains running in different directions makes for one helluva strong spar!! It may have been the only thing that kept this one from coming apart. I'll get the other ones out of the owners hangar and see if I can get a better logo picture.
Any chance of getting him to speak at your fly in? Or maybe he already does?

Re: Tolerton Spar Logo & Spar Lamination Pictures

Forrest, I remember interviewing a Mr. Tollerton during one of my visits to Alliance gathering book material. By now he would be quite old.
I remember two stories he told that didn't get in the book. You probably have heard them many times, but here goes...
As Taylorcraft got into produciton, Tollerton furnished all the wood. Couldn't collect cash so they took one of the planes as part paymenbt, I think the black one on page 57.
Also, when they started making wood L-2 wings, someone got the ideal of dipping the whole wing in a huge tank of varnish. They tried it, and the wings came out of the tank weighing a ton!. End of that ideal

That is Tolerton, yes he is in his 80's , His father Robert Tolerton was the one that bought the black ship ( or bartered for it, It went to Mexico later on) and the factory used it as a demo. I will check your sources that are here next week.
