  • oxidized paint on fabric

Any recommendations for cleaning up and polishing slightly oxidized paint on Ceconite fabric, that will keep it fairly shiny and protect against UV rays? I've read about Nouvus and Pledge on other sites. Any advice?

I checked around and heres what I found- Use a Carnuba paste wax- with no silicone: Mothers, Meguires, Turtle.

Supercoat and Flitz make products that also sound good.

Meguiar's cleaner wax has worked well for me...takes a couple to three rubbings to clean it up sometimes, depending on the extent of the oxidization and whether or not the weave of the fabric is filled with paint.

I tried a spot with Meguires cleaner wax and it really did a nice job- I dont know If I'll do the whole airplane because it contains silicone which could make it difficult to paint later (or rejuvenate?)

There is a new rubbing product that has no silicon that I just used to hand rub out my new lacquer paint job that I did on my Z28 Camaro. It has some light wax in it, but will clean off prettly easy if you want it off. It is very, very fine grain and similar to the professional stuff used for buffing new paint.
It is down at my hanger because I found it also works great for taking scratches off my sliding side windows on the T.
I'll get the name for you today if I can. It is a name brand and available at auto stores. You will need to put on a protective wax afterward, but it should take off oxides very easily.

I use Mothers and I am sure it has NO Silicone in it twice a year as Im sitting outside, I know no good but!
You can not paint over Silicone and it is very hard to imposible to remove from fabric.

Here is the stuff I used to rub out my new paint on the Z. It is actually made to polish oxidized paint. Marked on the container:
"New Turtle Wax premium grade polishing compound with nanotechnology polishing agents." Also marked "silicon free formula."
I got it at Auto Zone.
Best stuff I ever used, but does require some elbow grease.

                Timm,
When you say "slightly oxidized paint on Ceconite fabric" is that enamel or colored dope? If enamel your not going to rejuvenate it ever. If colored dope why not just rejuvenate?

                Darryl,
Does the New Turtle Wax premium grade polishing compound with nanotechnology polishing agents." Also marked "silicon free formula." Really clean the scratches from the sliding windows? I think we all have that problem.

If you just want to get the oxidation off, give 3M Finesse It II a try. It's expensive, but worth it. It's a white liquid in a quart bottle at most auto parts stores. It's just a light grit (for 1500 sandpaper marks), and water. Not nearly as gritty as a rubbing compound. Contains no wax. The stuff does wonders on plexiglass too to get rid of swirls and such. We used to use it to buff out the bubbles on helicopters after the chemical we sprayed etched them. Then you can "wax" it with whatever you like. An orbital buffer works good with it, and won't burn anything that way. Then wipe it off with a damp towel to get it off and wax with whatever you prefer.

I agree. It's also silicon free by the way.
