  • No New Carburetors

Precision Airmotive LLC has discontinued sales of all float
carburetors and component parts as of November 1, 2007. This
unfortunate situation is a result of our inability to obtain products
liability insurance for the product line. Precision Airmotive LLC and
its 43 employees currently manufacture and support the float
carburetors used in nearly all carbureted general aviation aircraft
flying today. Precision has been the manufacturer of these
carburetors since 1990. These FAA-approved carburetors were designed
as early as the 1930's and continue to fly over a million flight hours
a year. After decades of service, the reliability of these
    carburetors speaks for itself.

Nonetheless, Precision has seen its liability insurance premiums rise
dramatically, to the point that the premium now exceeds the total
sales dollars for this entire product line. ;In the past, we have
absorbed that cost, with the hope that the aviation industry as a
whole would be able to help address this issue faced by Precision
Airmotive, as well as many other small aviation companies. Our
    efforts have been unsuccessful.

This year, despite the decades of reliable service and despite the
design approval by the FAA, Precision Airmotive has been unable to
obtain products liability insurance for the carburetor product line.
While we firmly believe that the product is safe, as does the FAA, and
well supported by dedicated people both at Precision and at our
independent product support centers, unfortunately the litigation
costs for defending the carburetor in court are unsustainable for a
    small business such as Precision.

Therefore, as of November 1, 2007, Precision Airmotive LLC has been
left with no choice but to cease production and support of its float
    carburetor product line.

We are working with the engine manufacturers and others in the
industry in an attempt to minimize the impact on general aviation and
to provide future support for this product line. There is a
substantial quantity of parts and carburetors stocked at our
distributors which should be sufficient to support the industry for a
    short time.

You have to wonder how much this had to do with their decision:

Guess that would leave a rather bad taste in the insurance companies mouth, and a big hole in their bank account.

Well, I'll tell ya, unless the government can do something about the law suit
issue and get some tort reform out there, to limit this suit happy society
and lawyer frinze, this type of stuff is just the start of the problems, and its not just airplanes its everything we use. Our government has set the stage for failure. Our manufactures, and service folks can't complete as a result of this. Aircraft engine shops are another focus of this stuff. I've got a good
friend and very accomplished mechanical engineer that sold his out just recently for just this very reason. To quote him: "if you name is in the log book you will be suied" they shot gun everyone in the book to get what they can.

I heard an editorial on a radio show about 2 months back talking about how the real threat to ur country is the stagnation that will results from fear of lawsuits.

                The guy was so right.

How many good things are nipped in the bud because of liability or fear of it.

It is needed to have laws to take care of injured pepole. But to put a hole industry in jeapardy is not needed.
I wonder if the injured party was wearing shulder harnesess?
It is a common what facial injuries occore in car accidents if only lapbelts are used.
We saw what happend to insurance rates after the
Teneriffa accident in the 80's, and why did Cessna stop building the the 172.
Becuase of law suits! I know most of us fly for fun and enjoyment.
We all know the risks, but in most cases we are the risktaker. I have a 60 year old carburator what works good so long it is clean, and my airintake is clean. I know when you by a part it should be ready to use, but it also needed to be checked out for function after instalation. In many cases we are using old technolgy, but we maesure it with newer more exact measuring stick. We in the automotive industry know the difference in a the stardards needed today aginst what was needed in 1980, never mind 1950!
A 39 Chevy is always a 39 Chevy. If I drive a 39 Chevy I should put in newly desinged saftey belts becuase the greatly reduses the risks generated in the modern trafic. We often say they dont build whem like they used to.And what is a good thing in most cases. Yet we can't expect it the old to work as new
Common sence, please let it prevail!
Yes I have shoulder belts in my plane, and I am looking for a light( by weight and price) suiltable helmet for my protection.
                    Becuase I love my famely

I know it's tempting to blame some greedy lawyer, or a judge for awarding claims like these, BUT

The fact is that most of the time the awards are made by a jury, people just like you and me.

The lawyers just fan the flames, we provide the blaze.

we have to change this country if we are to continue leading the world in innovation.
Personally I think a depression would help a great deal to rid the gene pool of people who believe the govt tit is the proper one to suck from.
We need a country full of people who take pride in relying on themselves and let the lazy go hungry.
I am not refering to those who genuinely need help,no problem from me there.
