Thanks guys. Thanks JS, I remember reading that about MMO in one of the groups. My engine is old, will probably stay away from that route. I think I will try leaning first. When people use MMO in their gas, how much do they put? And is it enough to have any effect like in oil? My guess is not since it is mainly contained in the cylinder.

I don't know just off hand but its on the can or container don't remember, anyway, double it and it shouldn't hurt anything.

I'm kinda thinking like the others though, it sure could be that carb, those carbs are kinda crude. Mine acts very wierd in the mid range when cold From what I understand there is no good transition on those carbs from idle to fast, and many have a habbit of stumbling.

Try leaving the carb heat on untill you have full throttle.

CLEAN the carb! They work well if everthing is in good shape. New gaskets though out and Clean. Use a cup of MMO in a tank saves the carb from corrosion and cleans some soot out in jugs I think.
Reminds me I shall by some more.

Leaning too mush will: burn valves, pistons and prompots stalling in idle. plugs turn lite brown to grey. Hard if not Imposible to idle.
Too rich: will foul pluggs, burn more fuel, and rough idle with flooding when starting. May run rougher at higher altitudes. Plugs turn black and loads up with soot and carbon.
You mentined rough running after long taxi and slow flight. Could be oil fouling of the pluggs what is your oil cosumtion?
Try this: run her on the ground and create the fault, and shut down right away and check the pluggs for oil and general condition.
My plugs would get oil fould in my old motor and clear out with high speed run up!

Making adjustments? Mark where you started!!!!! goes for any adjustments you make so you can retun to the original set up!!!!
Make small adjustments and record them!! example 1/4 turn counter clockwise. What are you adjusting ? Is it air or fuel understand your carburator, READ the manual!

If adjusting the carburator and nothing helps, and you turn your attention to the mags, reset the carb to the orignal setup!
Or you still have a problem! Now it will the carb! In esence you will have a good mags and a wrongly adjusted carburator, many truoble shooters do this and similar misstakes!
You dont want to have rough running engine, it can quit on you.
Mags: What make are they and in what condition are they!
Plugs?
I installed another engine with my old carb and mags. I know what condition they are in no addjustments made, they functioned well on the old block no reason why it should not do so on the new one!
Make shure you do not have any airleaks in the intake system!

Good advice Len. My Stromburg was just rebuilt after 12 years of use since the restore. I had forgoten how smooth it ran a few years ago. It'll idle a fine below 500 RPM now too.
