  • cracking dope on cotton and bad fabric??

Was going to fly my BC-12D over to the IA tomorrow so I went to the airport today to give the plane a good once over. It has been sitting out all summer with just about an hour of time on it. So as I am making my walk around I take my fore finger knuckle and wrap on the fabric at various locations... kind of like you would do if knocking on a door (but maybe twice as hard) In a couple areas I hear a distinct crack sound and the paint cracks... sort of in the shape of a fisheye. The fabric remained a bit deformed in that area.

I know none of you can provide a clear cut answer without seeing it but is this an indication that my fabric needs to be ripped off and redone?

for reference the plane was covered with Irish linen and finished with cab dope in 1971 where is sat in a garage until 2001. Since then it's seen the light of day for a total of maybe 18 months.

My IA will look at it tomorrow but seeing as how this could be a major problem I'm stressing about it until he checks it out.

Well since you are in AZ the fabric might be still usable but a punch test will tell for sure. As for the finish sounds like it is hard and brittle. If it is dope you can rejuvenate but if enamel your in for recover. I tried to remove the enamel on a PA12 once but in the end it was just easier to recover. The work is less and money is just the cost of the fabric since you will still have to use all the dope and tapes etc. FYI had a Pitts S1c here in Florida that was a hanger queen and the fabric was cotton and dope. Just had to recover it due to rotten fabric. Finish looked good but fabric had no fungicide and only lasted 10 years.

1971?? wow I think it is time for a fabric test..... good luck. These aircraft are meant to be re covered at half that time just for a good inspection of the interior.
